Description A good shot of us at PAX east 2011. The Mordin costume came out quite well. I made each of the costumes and I am the one in the middle.

I confess that I photoshoped Tali's helmet to look more purple. That's show biz for ya

Thank you Kelly Rowles for taking and posting the shot.

only problem with a Mordin costume is he has a really thin head, so its hard to have a mask that looks normal, still great costumes though. but for some reason i keep thinking of a Krogan when i look at mordins face lol

you can not here him talk very well with the mask on. He can breath since there is a whole in the mask's mouth.

Oh wow, fantastic job with the costumes. They're really well put together, some of the best ME cosplays I've seen so far. The Mordin mask looks awesome considering you have to work it over a human's head.

thank you sir! Used a bunch of foam fabricating much like you do.

Evilted40 In reply to Danosuke [2011-03-26 19:36:43 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I like your costumes. What kind of foam do you use and what do you coat it with, so that you can paint it? When I started I use to use holster foam because it was cheap. But it was a lot of work to coat with rubber latex and keep it clean looking.

I use closed cell EVA foam that you can buy from hardware stores. It's somewhat amateurish but it works and it CHEAP. I sealed them with latex paint that I thinned out and sprayed on. Took a couple layers to get it to soak it all up so I wonder if there are better solutions. I then used airbrush acrylics for detailing. I've heard some people use plasti-dip to seal foam but you can't spray that stuff so it always looks lumpy and un-even to me. Do you seal the L200 you use?

Evilted40 In reply to Danosuke [2011-03-27 18:27:28 +0000 UTC]

What I seal the L-200 foam with is (clear acrylic gesso) that you can get at any art supply store. I like to add a couple drops of water to thin it out a bit, and a drop of acrylic paint to it so that you can see what spots you miss. Because it dries clear! You can get tool dip in a spray. It's called (plastic dip) Most hardware stores carry it, if not you could get it on line. (Plastic dip.com)

What I did for my STEAM PUNK suit. I coated it with rubber latex by spraying in on. How did I do that you ask? The Critter gun! Heres the link. Plastic dips great for smaller parts on a costume, but for large areas I like using rubber latex, it holds up better and last a lot longer.

Yeah I wasn't going to put liquid latex in my airbrush but that Critter gun looks like it would do the trick. Says it will spray all that stuff with only 30 PSI? I wouldn't even need a new compressor. Pretty cool, I think I'll try one out. Thanks for the info

Your welcome! When I was your age back 70's and early 80s I was trying like hell to find out how things were made! No internet no books just tying stuff and seeing what works! I move to California in 89 and met Asho Gatto from japan. He use to make costumes for all those crazy power ranger like shows. We worked together for about 8 months and I learned so much form him. So over the years working in movies I've have develop some of my own technics, and still learning more very day.

Looking you pics I can tell you have a natural skill for it! Keep it up!

It's true I'm quite lucky that so many people on the internet are sharing what many consider "trade secrets." It is very cool to be talking to a professional like you. Particularly one who makes costumes for his own movies. A big inspiration for me was David Carpenter's techniques (EvilFX [link] ) He would probably like to meet you too. He's a huge Guyver fan.

It makes me happy that I can give the tips to someone that can really use them.

Yes, I've seen his GUYVER suit! I worked and was in Both GUYVER movies! GUYVER DARK HERO is much better the first one.

awesome xD you did well on all costumes...from what material did you make your armor though?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Danosuke In reply to DeadlyNinja [2011-03-15 00:27:13 +0000 UTC]

Plastic and EVA foam. Also paint, lots of that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DeadlyNinja In reply to Danosuke [2011-03-15 01:04:34 +0000 UTC]

hmm everyone seems to be using the eva =s but i see you didnt use the textured one which i say its good since shepards armor doesnt have texture on the armor itself, only the suit under..did you paint directly over the foam or you layered plastic over it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Danosuke In reply to DeadlyNinja [2011-03-15 01:08:56 +0000 UTC]

I had sculpted the chest and shoulder pieces since they would be the most visible. I casted them out of plastic and glue the foam to the back. All the other parts are straight EVA foam.
