Description

The Advanced Super-Capital (ASC) program was a design program undertaken by the ASDB to determine the design of Starfleet’s first Super-Capital starship in 50 years. Starfleet's preliminary experiences with the Jem'Hadar Battleship in the Dominion War had convinced the organisation that the time was now to adopt Super-Capital designs into fleet service, lest the Federation be outclassed in any future engagements. After an initial proposal phase in mid 2375, two designs were selected for full testing; the Odyssey and Caliburn Classes.

The Odyssey Class Star Cruiser from Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards represented a leap forward in technological ability. While the more expensive option, the Odyssey came with several technological innovations, and was flexible enough to act in any role that she could be required to fill in. Among other innovations, the class possessed an advanced Bio-Neural Computer Core, planetary-grade scientific facilities and the engineering production capabilites of a small Starbase.

The Caliburn Class Space Control Cruiser from San Francisco Fleet Yards by contrast represented a more conservative attempt at a super-capital design. Built using technology from the Sovereign Class, the Caliburn was specifically designed to fulfil the role of a dedicated Fleet command starship. With a full complement of fighters and several escorts, a Caliburn could theoretically defend an entire sector.

Construction of both vessels began in late 2375, with Odyssey launching in October 2380. Caliburn would follow suit in December of the same year. Testing would begin in January 2381, with exercises largely centring around Saturn in the Sol system.

In the end, the more progressive Odyssey Class was selected for full production. While Starfleet was willing to let Caliburn’s sister ship, Caledfwlch, finish construction, a third vessel that was halfway done was scrapped and the resources given to the Romulan Evacuation Fleet.

In the meantime, the Odyssey Class was cleared for an initial production run of 14 additional vessels. Odyssey would later be joined in service by her sister ship Verity, which had been requisitioned by Starfleet Command to serve as flagship of the Romulan Evacuation Fleet.
