Description
As promised here’s the newly improved (and final) version of my OC’s reference sheet. Hopefully, my drawings in this one look at least slightly better than the ones before.
EDIT: Made a remastered version of this and redrew a couple of the poses, because I didn’t like how the older versions turned out.
Now, this character synopsis here is very lengthy, so if you could just bear with me, that’d be great…
Briar is a feisty, free-spirited forest sprite who came from a far off place known as The Willow, a lush green island hidden by an invisible magic barrier. She was an outcast among her kind, because she was “born different”. Briar couldn’t physically use magic to heal herself like the other sprites could (she’d make her own potions for that), and despite having plant magic, she was really only good at creating mutant plants (and before you ask, no, this is NOT my fanon origin story for Cagney Carnation, though, Bry does sort of befriend him later on).
Another thing that made Briar stand out from all the other forest sprites of The Willow, was that she had very unstable fire and hurricane powers, which she’d accidentally unleash whenever she was very angry. She’s also the only sprite of her kind that had the ability to shape shift.
((Don’t worry, there’s a reason why her powers are like this, I just can’t give it away yet, because it’s a very big spoiler.))
Briar also enjoyed playing pranks, due to a coping mechanism she developed from the other sprites constantly leaving her out of “normal sprite activities”, because her magic was deemed too dangerous and unpredictable.
Mother Nature, the guardian of The Willow and mother figure to all the forest sprites, was aware that Briar was different, but still wanted her to become a better sprite. Eventually, Briar managed to find a small opening in the magic barrier that was keeping her inside, and made a break for it while everyone else was asleep. Briar initially ran away, so that she could find out more about her powers and where they came from, but she became so wrapped up in her newfound freedom, then finally settled down in Inkwell Isles.
The first time Briar meets Cuphead and Mugman is a little bit after “The Devil’s Revenge”. Mugs suggests to Cups that they go on a camping trip with Elder Kettle, to distract him from trying anything stupid again at the Carnevil; but during the night BEFORE that, Briar came across burnt remains of the forest that Cuphead destroyed with The Devil’s pitchfork. This made her very frustrated, not just because of how long it’d take for one forest sprite to heal, but because of how limited her plant magic was. Then, after a miscommunication with the local forest animals, she mistakes Cuphead and Mugman for “that weird horned creature’s two little cohorts”. So, she uses her powers to try and scare the two cups away from the forest they were camping in; but after realizing they were just kids who have an elderly caretaker, she revealed herself to them, apologized for the misunderstanding, and briefly explained her story to them.
Then, upon first meeting The Devil, Briar wasn’t the least bit intimidated by him, because she’s heard so many stories about a devil over the years, that she was kind of disappointed to find that he was nothing more than a “angry fuzzy noodle”. This bruised his ego so much more, that he made it his mission to find out what her worst fear is (all while trying to snag Cuphead’s soul). She also gets along very well with Henchman, because of his gentle and unassuming nature, and because of his willingness to listen whenever something on her mind is bothering her.
