Description Tears clouding my vision,
I steady the cold metal in my grasp,
Pointing it down at his neck,
His exposed, unaware neck.

I know he's talking to me,
I just can't hear him any more,
So I just nod and agree with him,
So he can be happy in his last moments.

I tense my hand,
I have to stop shaking,
But I can't stop,
Not knowing what I have to do.

I pull my hand away,
I can't do it,
Can I?
I have to.

I steady my aim again,
My hand tenses,
The shaking stops,
I pull the trigger.

The gunshot rockets off the trees around,
I hear movement and turn around,
They're all running down the banks,
Some are cheering.

My eyes meet those of another man,
He's the only one that understands what I've done,
Why I had to do it,
Why I did it for him.

I didn't do it for myself,
I didn't do it to get away,
I did it for him.
I did it for Lennie.
