Donkey Kong makes gorilla noises
Diddy Kong makes chimpanzee noises
King K. Rool makes crocodile noises
Bowser makes dinosaur noises

Well from what I saw of the Master Spirits, Funky Kong seems to still speak english, while Kraid just makes unintelligible Roars and grunts, which could imply that Bowser, Diddy Kong, and King K. Rool can still speak english in Smash, they just haven't been doing that on screen.

Strangely I don't really mind how the Dk cast sound but Bowser's wannabe Godzilla like voice sounds weak in 4 and Ultimate, it wasn't too bad in his earlier appearances.Β
The devs seem to prefer to make them sound like ferocious animals from what I understand.

Personally I prefer their voices from Donkey Kong 64. And I find it weird that Bowser has his Godzilla like voice, while Bowser jr. has his usual one.

I never got the whole making them sound like actual animals thing,Β especially in Bowser's case when they just use dragon roars.

I hate how Smash still uses these "voices". It's especially jarring for DK, as his voice actor already has a role as Ganondorf.

Meanwhile, Yoshi, Bowser Jr., AND the Koopalings still sound like their usual selves. Ever since the Super Smash Bros. series transitioned over to a less realistic road with Smash 3DS / Wii U, that's pretty much when Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and Bowser should've stopped sounding like real world animals; they were cartoonish enough to be voiced by Takashi Nagasako, Katsumi Suzuki, and Kenny James respectively.
And even though King K. Rool had been absent for over 10 years, the last person to voice him still voices Funky Kong; Toshihide Tsuchiya.
In regards to Ridley, however, because he's from a more realistic franchise, he would have to sound like a real world monster. As for King Dedede, despite his cartoonish appearance, he never had a notable voice actor in the Kirby games, so Sakurai's voice work had to do.
