Along with the sprites we see another type of Fae, the Gnome.
Gnomes are small, pitch black creatures with wide eyes, pointed ears, claws on their hands and feet, and they stand no taller than two spans of an average man’s hand. They often keep themselves cloaked and covered, allowing only their eyes to peek out of their cloaks or hoods, however they possess sharp teeth and wide mouths, as well as occasionally sporting long tails with bits of fluff at the end. Gnomes are impish little faerie folk that live in hidden towns in the woods that delve into the underground. They are directly opposite to the Sprites, which exist as ethereal beings of light, and Gnomes are more shadowed and chthonic fae that scramble about in dark corridors underground.
Gnomes are known for being scavengers, building or creating whatever they need with a swift intuition, and it is believed that Gnomes were among the first of the Fae to learn that Iron was such a deadly poison to their people, and are seen as some of the first creatures that could harness rust magic to destroy the iron of man. Gnomes are deeply in tune with the natural world, and are considered spirits of the Earth, being one with the shade of the caverns and of the shadows themselves. They have the power to draw minerals and ore from the ground to the surface, and to utilize shadows to cause illusions both auditory and visually. Because of this it is believed that no one has ever truly seen what a gnome looks like, and they have only seen bits and pieces of them due to the shadow magic coursing through their body and their heavy clothes, with the most some creatures ever seeing of them being their eyes as their mouth opens wide revealing a slightly glowing green tongue and mouth.
Though they can draw minerals from the earth, they are not adept at mining, nor do they possess any great physical prowess, though they forged an alliance with the hairy earthen creatures, born from the festering maggots of primal earth and liberated from their creators, the True Dwarves or Dhvaras, and stole away the names of their predecessors, granting them the name of dwarf. In their freedom the dwarves forged a bond with the Fae and with the Gnomes and would aid them in mining the minerals that they brought t the surface, and would stand against the armies of man as they were not weak to iron as the Fae were.
Gnomes are capable, if not small creatures known for trickery and for stealing common objects from humans and escaping deep into the dark. Many gnomes could be hiding in your home right now by standing in the shadows and closing their eyes, disappearing into the darkness in an instant, and melding with the earth to avoid trouble. They are able to build strange machines through their magic and odds and ends, and as such will often piece together small kingdoms from discarded goods and various items, thinking many of the discarded items of mankind as treasures. They can craft great devices when in tandem with other creatures and it was from their blood and curses that the great castle of Camelot was made a symbol of man’s treachery and greed and transformed into the twisted endless fortress that plagued man for centuries…
Gnomes can be great companions. Though they are fae and hold different morals than other creatures, they are less likely to outright attack humans or other humanoid creatures unless empowered by numbers. Like other Fae, they have a constant want for things, new and old, and have no true concept of fullness and can often over eat if led to large quantities of food, or given too many snacks or gifts. They may be willing to trade items, though the actual worth of their items or what’s given may be very different to you.
Alchemists have captured gnomes in the past and attempted to break down their essence to create life as they grant life to their various machines. Through it they created the Pygmy, and eventually through similar means they were able to create a homunculi, though those have no relation to Gnomes.
