All the hedgehogs in the US are pets. They can't survive in the wild here, because pet hedgies don't have the ability to hibernate anymore. So I'll either find people to adopt them, or keep them. I'll make sure they go to good homes though.

I've never had rats or hamsters to compare. Hedgies are nocturnal and you can wake them up during the day if you have to, but they're most playful if you wait until 9 or 10 pm. They also poop large amounts every time you hold them, so you have to keep a paper towel nearby. They'll play with cat toys or paper tubes (from toilet tissue). They'll try eating almost anything, and when they eat something new, they do a funny thing where they chew it up into a foamy spit and put it on their spikes, so some people really enjoy trying to find things their hedgehogs have never tasted so that they can watch them.
My hedgehogs will escape their cages and roam the house whenever possible. Spikey (the male) was in love with a satin sheet that my daughter had...every morning we'd find him rolled up in the sheet, until we switched cages so he couldn't get out. They'll also swim if we put a couple inches of water in the bathtub, but they don't always like that.
One nice thing about them is that they don't smell. If you're allergic to other furry pets, you're not likely to be allergic to hedgehogs. The males have a bit of a musky scent, but the females don't smell at all. They eat cat food, so they're not hard to feed.
They are prone to tumors and diseases...I haven't had one develop cancer, but my first hedgehog died of wobbly hedgehog syndrome.
