Ah, here we are! "Skoll and Hati, the Swallowers", a Norse myth.

This was punishment upon their dad for bragging. Their paths were soon set into a counting of days and years when the hag of death, Gulveig, unleashed the two wolves Skoll and Hati. They leapt into the sky to eat the sun and moon, but neither could catch them. It is said by Saga, goddess of story, that if the wolves catch the sun and moon and eat them, the world will end. It is just because the wolves chase the sun and moon that they move, as is all life on earth."

I like this. I'm a mega mythology nerd, and I think that the reason Hati and Skoll tried to eat the moon and sun is because they were raised by a Giantess who was jealous of the Gods.

i think the contrast is supposed to be that one loves the sun and wants it to be a part of him, while the other hates the moon and wants to destroy it.
