******************

KHAOS (or Chaos) was the first of the Protogenoi (primeval gods) to emerge at the creation of the universe. She was followed in quick succession by Gaia (Earth), Tartaros (the Underworld) and Eros (Love the life-bringer).

Khaos was the lower atmosphere which surrounded the earth - invisible air and gloomy mist. Her name khaos literally means the gap, the space between heaven and earth. Khaos was the mother or grandmother of the other substances of air: Nyx (Night), Erebos (Darkness), Aither (Light) and Hemera (Day), as well as the various emotion-affecting Daimones which drifted through it. She was also a goddess of fate like her daughter Nyx and grand-daughters the Moirai.

Actually, Khaos - or Chaos - was the primordial void of black that existed before all things. It has no gender, but has been referred to as both a father and a mother poetically in Greek mythology. From it came Chronos(Time) and Ananke(Inevitability and Necessity) who, encircled Phanes - also called Protogonos or Eros - who is the god of generation and life. Those were the first three Protogenoi - along with Gaia, sometimes. Nyx, goddess of the night, and Erebus, god of the Mists of Darkness, came from Khaos as well, and their union created Aether, the heavens, and Hemera, the day. Afterwards, some sources claim she alone gave birth to, amongst others, the Moirae, Charon, Hypnos, and Thanatos. Ultimately, Nyx created Moros, who is viewed mythologically as the supreme force in existence, which no living thing can command nor defeat, as he is doom - fate itself - and drives all things to their ends.

I realize this is, like, 2 and a half years later, lol, but there's actually two schools of thought on Chaos. The earliest sources seem to label her a goddess of air - the mortal air that we all breathe (as opposed to the higher, heavenly air (Aither) or the dark, underworld air (Erebos)). It's only later sources that label her as the primordial being that you mention. Earlier sources label this primordial mix of everything as simply "mud".

hey, I do compliment you a lot!
Actually, I wouldn't spend that much time nagging you if I didn't like what you do, so you might as well take my nagging as a compliment in itself
