Description EDIT: The final version of this is here - [link] . I re-drew the bow tie to give it more texture and more detail.

"Ancient and forever" - Digital art drawn on iPad

"He's like fire and ice and rage. He's like the night and the storm in the heart of the sun. He's ancient and forever. He burns at the centre of time and can see the turn of the universe.

And.... he's wonderful."

EDIT: 10" x 8" fine art prints (with a framed option) available at [link] !!!

LOL yeah sorry, on my iPad. I've no idea how I do it, I just kind of... do. But I DO know that I'm very slow. like VERY slow. Some artists can do a thing in an afternoon and it's AMAZING. I can never do that. I have to work on things forever to get those kind of results. All I do is lots of comparisons.. looking at photos and thinking "ok, this bit here... could it look better? if so.. how" and try to figure out what isn't quite 'real 'looking. And I just tinker.Β

Basically... never worry too much about how things look, never be worried that other people are better.. .people always are! Just do stuff.. mess around.. Β don't try to be perfect... just do stuff. And while you're doing it just look at examples of real world stuff and see how things are. Stuff always has way more detail and variation in it than we first think. Skin tones across a face... shadows, fur, trees... anything. Loads and loads of subtle colour changes.Β

I've looked at your stuff and you're doing great! Just keep going and do the same!

DarrenCarnall In reply to Gabbi-cakes [2013-06-05 06:57:10 +0000 UTC]

of course. I used a program called Sketchbook Pro for my iPad. I found watching lots of videos of people doing digital drawing and painting on YouTube really helpful in seeing how others do it you know, you should give that a try! Go onto YouTube and search for 'digital drawing' or something... and there are LOADS

Watch loads of those, and just keep practicing... draw things from memory, from photos, everything. And do different things. You might find you're amazing at one thing you'd never tried before.

Let me know how it goes!

I used a stylus (called a Maglus... i like it because it has a magnet in it, so I can just stick it to the front of my iPad) but I could have done it just as easy with a finger. It's just more comfy sometimes feeling like you're holding a pen or a brush

i have a pen with a rubber nib. what program do you use? when i drag it elsewhere i start to putz around in sketchpad xpress
[link] my most recent one not finished.

working mostly from memory. needs right side of the face and scales.

DarrenCarnall In reply to Kuwaizair [2012-10-29 11:13:06 +0000 UTC]

I use sketchbook pro... so pretty much the same as what you use I think. That face is coming along nicely.. you should do some work copying things, working from photos and the like. That's what I do most of the time... it's good being able to go back to the photo to see how things should be. The end results can be great!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kuwaizair In reply to DarrenCarnall [2012-11-07 19:04:23 +0000 UTC]

when I do, things get deformed and I go "screw this".

is pro worth it? from the reviews it's all "fnjkdsghkjsdhgkldshsh moar layers". there is procreate program and some other's. going by "oh look 5 stars" is not enough for me. I might ask here and on Yahoo answers.

but yeh. somtimes when I copy things get askew. even with a grid. I guess when I "master that"(unlikly) I can wow people with even drawing existing people and not generic faces, with a composition not from a photo. when a copy is too good I think "ah trace! what a liar"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DarrenCarnall In reply to Kuwaizair [2012-11-08 08:19:54 +0000 UTC]

do I like Sketchbook Pro? Well i was able to do the above image in it so it's good enough to work with.... I've not used that Procreate one, although I did download it last week., Maybe I'll try it for the next one. Sketchbook crashed on me a few times, but that might have been me being unlucky. Read as many reviews as you can, it's what I did. I've got a proper Wacom graphics tablet on its way and I'm gonna get Sketchbook for my mac too so I'll be able to start a sketch on the iPad, save it to the cloud, and then carry on with it on my computer... should be good.

well there's nothing wrong with tracing if it helps you be a better drawer also.. if you don't like copying things... go the opposite... be artistic.. be messy... make big sploshy modern art pieces! It's all fun

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kuwaizair In reply to DarrenCarnall [2012-11-08 13:54:03 +0000 UTC]

it's just people trace a lot. and go "i did this all on my own effff you, you are just gelly" I am told if to trace for practice, just do it and don't uploaded it and goddamnit do not sell prints.

some things are to good to be true, and I have a feeling a trained eye can tell a trace. someone pulled wool over my eyes with a wolf drawing they did "from memory" from wolves they saw while hiking. it was a direct trace of a Carl Brenders painting. "miles to go" i think it was called. when I did a lay over and confronted the guy, for the betrayal he tried to back out of it with "NO I did see those wolves, he must of copied my drawing". I find some traced images to be very very stiff.

I'd only copy my own for photos. it's mine and all I have to loose is looking cheap. but I think, some hyper realists do it. the only problem is I don't really think I have the meens to get my own wild life images. a $2,000 setup, and god knows how much a photo safari is. the wolf sanctuary near me charges $300 for a guided 4 hour tour.

although I did do this from one of mine. [link] recently.

[link] deformed coyote.

[link] from nothing.

but eh. I think some people like a copy when it looks good and exactly like the thing it was copied from. I really need to do an experment involving that.

also, I found you from FB. lucky there is one page that almost makes it mandatory to link back. but people will still scold you for trashing re-posters for not linking back. "boo hoo stop being so mean. boohooo bullie"

hehe, well you can clearly paint... so I would say just try anything.. memory.. tracing.. copying... a mix of everything! You'll make good images and more importantly have fun doing it

Kuwaizair In reply to DarrenCarnall [2012-11-09 16:59:12 +0000 UTC]

that and i feel awful for messing up someone. and it would be horrible. "I love you as character ______ I am sending you this botched painting of you to our fan mail favorite entertaining person"

I am sure a bunch of them are sweet and will cherrish anything. as long as it dosen't get mailed to them with such words of "I messed it up, here, take it, it's supposed to be you. copied it from a screen grab from the show/movie you were in. with love and frustration in NJ"
