Description 's grandfather, who sounded like a darned cool guy. Happy Birthday, Knitzi.

Sorry there isn't the element of surprise this time around, but I figured it would be best to let you pick out what you wanted, LOL.

I wanted the card I was using to be rough and weathered even before I began, so I scoured it thoroughly with metal wool (the sort you use to scrub pots with) and used the same to rub brown-grey watercolour into the paper. The final product (after drawing and colouring) was then liberally Blitzed with markers for noise/grain.

This treatment of the paper gave me exactly what I wanted in terms of looks and texture. Unfortunately, it also meant that, once I put a mark down, I didn't dare make corrections lest I ruined the paper. So no accuracy points for me here. Sorry.

Media:
- brown card: 1
- metal wool: 1
- watercolours: black+white+brown (yes, that $2.70 box I'd been meaning to throw away)
- colour pencils: Faber-Castell Creative Studio (36) + Colleen (60)
- Blitzer airbrush: 1
- markers: black, brown, magenta

Long time no see!

Thank you very much, FF. ^_^ The reference photo provided was a polaroid; I wanted it to feel *older* and more "traditional" and gritty (which is something that doesn't come across too well when you scan a picture instead of showing the real thing, alas); I'm glad it works for you.

"Courage", or "foolhardiness"? Sometimes it's hard to tell.

" "Courage", or "foolhardiness"? Sometimes it's hard to tell."

Indeed--and sometimes it makes no difference which it really is!

This is just wonderful--I am still in awe!

You did a fantastic job here, Far. By the way you've drawn him I can tell he was a fantastic man with a great sense of humor. Bravo!

WraithTen In reply to DarthFar [2008-07-16 16:18:33 +0000 UTC]

Wouldn't that be a sight? Dakota loves noisy toys so he'd be squeaking, by the humans of course, and poor Bas wouldn't know what to do. He'd want to be with people but there's a talking carrot...

You didn't get that quite right. It shoulda been "evil talking carrot."

I love you, and I am going to glomp you publicly for same and I don't care who knows:So there.

You are the type of guy that Pa would've called a "Good Joe." He had a knack for spotting that kind of thing, don'tcha know. Didn't have much of a talent for creating a Good Joe, but we'll just blame genetics on that. Pa was definitely more of a mechanic than a chemist.

And dammit, you owe me more Kleenexยฎ.

Seeing this image, I'm now thinking that I need to build an add-on to the dollhouse and recreate Pa's workshop.

At the very least, I need to print and frame this fabulous image in 1/12th scale, so I can hang it on the wall of the dollhouse. But you knew I was going to do that.

Thank you so very much, Farskaroni. From the bottom of my heart. I can't tell you how precious this is to me, but I'm hoping you know.

DarthFar In reply to DobbyKnits [2008-07-01 03:13:54 +0000 UTC]

Dangit Knitzi, my country's all out of Kleenexยฎ because of you. Here, have a couple of beach towels instead.

I'm happy how much this means to you. I greatly enjoy your stories about him... particularly that evilly funny one about Rick and the lawnmower, aheheh... so consider this homage to a great guy!

And that dollhouse would totally rock with a workshop addition, although I'm guessing that making scaled models of screwdrivers would kill your eyesight!

Wow, that turned out really well - love the "old photo" look you've created with the colours. And the paper - I didn't think you could do that with paper! But it turned out great. I bet the effect's even better when you see it in front of you. So yeah - it looks awesome!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

DarthFar In reply to SvenjaLiv [2008-06-29 15:10:04 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! I'll let you in on a little something: Neither did I! It just seemed like a good idea at the time. And, miracle of miracles, I managed *not* to ruin the paper in the process.

And yeah, it does look better in "real life"... but maybe that's because you can also *touch* the roughness. LOL.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SvenjaLiv In reply to DarthFar [2008-06-29 15:28:30 +0000 UTC]

Well, no risk no fun, never tell me the odds, etc! I always like art that's more than just "look"... but I'm crap at producing it. I can't work with textures. Unlike you!

DarthFar In reply to SvenjaLiv [2008-06-29 15:59:19 +0000 UTC]

Corellians FTW!

Honestly, my philosophy concerning art-related stuff is: damn the torpedos, full speed ahead! and if it turns out crap, you can always junk it later.

Thanks very much! So *that's* what it is: a Brillo pad! I just nicked this from the kitchen drawer; there was no packaging.

[is a Brillo pad a Brillo pad without the soap, though? Because I just looked it up... and mine's just a wad of steel. LOL.]

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 2

WraithTen In reply to DarthFar [2008-06-30 18:27:20 +0000 UTC]

Steel wool. And, incidentally, if you touch the steel wool to a 9-volt battery you get fire.

Perhaps I shouldn't have told you this...

Brillo pads are usually just metal. No soap involved with those. Now an SOS pad is the wool with soap in it, but it rusts something fierce.
