Description
On a warm, clear, spring day, a special moment was taking place. With a cool breeze and bird song overhead, a tall red and white mare closed her eyes and rested after her hard labor. Before her, among the fresh clover and mustard flowers, a new life had been brought into the world. The black and white colt had nary a clue how special he was, not just to his parents but his family and herd as a whole.
He was the firstborn son of a firstborn son, the first grand foal for Ajax and Myrtle. Finn, and much of the herd, had bared witness to the event, though some of the younger foals were ushered away from the scene. This was the first foal of the season, after all the bad events of the previous seasons, the herd was relieved to have some good news. There was excitement in the air, with chatter and cooing amongst the mares as they watched from a distance.
A graying paint mare was the first to approach, offering her congratulations to the first time mother as she looked over her grandson. Fancy had been staring at the foal, his striking black and white coat framed by the purple flowers he laid in. The first time mother was still trying to process that she had just birthed this small, beautiful creature and that he was hers. Instinct spurred her to move her tired body, and despite the lingering pain she rose to her hooves and moved over to her foal.
The foal, a colt, was shaking his head and snorting softly to clear his airways. His body quivered, chilled by the cool world he suddenly found himself in. Bright blue eyes blinked rapidly as he tried to take in his overwhelming surroundings. His dark, warm world was suddenly cold, bright, and full of giants that loomed over him. The colt lurched away as one came too close, only to flop closer to another on the other side. He didn’t understand, everything was so confusing yet something told him it was okay and not to be scared.
A soft nose pressed against him, sniffing him before a warm tongue began to lap at him. The colt lifted his head, watching the large red creature beside him start to clean away the material still on him from his birth. Something deep and powerful inside him told him that this was his mother, his protector, his life provider. He didn’t understand it, but accepted it nonetheless. He looked at her, and she looked at him, a connection forming between them.
A nudge on his back startled a small squeal from him, and he turned to see a white faced grey creature behind him. Its blue eyes were warm and they made noises at him that he didn’t understand yet. They nudged him once more, prompting him to sit up again.
“Come on lil one, you need to stand my dear.” Myrtle murmured to the foal as she encouraged him up. The sooner he was up, the sooner he could have his first drink.
Fancy looked worried at Myrtle’s actions, but the older mare clearly knew what she was doing. Movement caught Fancy’s eye and she looked up to see her love, Finn, standing behind his mother and looking at their foal. He noticed her staring and turned to look at her, a huge smile across his face. She returned his smile, it had finally sunk in for both of them that they were now parents. “What should we name him?” Fancy asked.
Finn looked his son over, considering, thinking, but coming up blank, “I.. don’t know. I can’t think of anything beyond how beautiful he is and how amazing you are.” Finn sounded a little choked up, but he held it together.
“When I had to name your brother, I was stumped too. Yours and your sister’s names had come so easily to your father and I. In the end, I looked around and thought about the world around myself, of the names of the flowers, trees, rocks… finally I settled on Jasper.” Myrtle explained, hoping it would give the new parents some ideas. While they looked to be pondering it, Myrtle took over cleaning the colt up. He made little nickers and squeals, but seemed to enjoy the attention as he began trying to move his legs around. He was a stunning foal, and it made Myrtle’s heartache that Ajax was not here to witness the birth of his first grandfoal. He’d been so excited when the couple had announced they were expecting, hooting and hollering like the goofy father he was.
Instinct once again was kicking in for the foal, telling him to use his spindly legs to stand up. He found his limbs incredibly hard to control, the joints wobbled, and didn’t seem like they could actually hold his weight. He snorted, ears flicking back in irritation as he struggled to control all four limbs at once. All the while, the white faced horse kept urging him on. Finally, he shoved himself up on his front legs, but his back legs dragged and tangled behind him, toppling him once more. His efforts drew his mothers’ attention back to him, and she quickly checked him over for injuries after his little fall.
“Easy baby, don’t hurt yourself.” Fancy cooed to him, though there was a serious tone to it.
“He’ll be fine, foals are tougher than they look. The ground is plenty soft here, even if he does fall he should get right back up.” Myrtle reassured the worried mare.
Fancy looked a bit apprehensive, but finally started nudging her foal like she’d seen Myrtle do. He nickered at her, then snorted when she kept poking him. With a huff, he tried again to stand, this time getting his back feet up first, then the front. With only his second try, the colt had managed to stand on his shaky legs. “That’s it! Good boy!” Fancy said excitedly, gently nuzzling her baby. He staggered for a moment, knocked off balance, and bumped into Myrtle. She steadied him, giving him a few more licks.
“Look how strong he is already… he’s going to grow big, I’m sure of it.” Finn commented, entranced as he watched his son taking his first, rickety steps towards his mother.
Now that he was up on his legs, things seemed to be happening way faster than he was ready for. It was so hard to walk, how did the big ones do it so easily? Every step threatened to send him back into the flowers below, the breeze was even trying to push him over! Still, he felt compelled to stagger over to the red mare, his mother. He felt hungry, and unlike before it wasn’t being sated immediately. Instead, he followed his nose towards his mother’s belly, and with some help from his mother he found her udder and took his first drink.
As Fancy groomed her nursing foal, she was still mulling over name ideas for him. A gorgeous boy like him needed a special name. She glanced around, looking at the natural world around her like Myrtle suggested. She noted how blue the sky and distant mountains were, comparing them to her son’s eyes. Though his eyes were an icy white, she found herself reminded of a pretty speckled blue rock she’d stumbled upon before. Finn had told her it was Lapis Lazuli, a pretty rare rock to find. She remembered how he’d made a comment about how it didn’t compare to her beauty, something that still made her blush. “Finn, what do you think about calling him Lapis Lazuli?”
Finn was snapped out of his staring, taking a moment to register the question as a name suggestion. “Like the rock? I mean... his eyes aren’t the right shade of blue, but he’s just as beautiful. Maybe just Lazuli, perhaps?” Finn suggested. He looked at his son, repeating the name, considering and finally nodding, “Yeah, Lazuli. Laz for short.”
Fancy smiled, glad that he liked her idea. She looked down to her baby, nibbling his mane lightly as she whispered, “Welcome to the family, Lazuli.”

“Aww, isn’t he cute?” Jessa cooed, watching the newborn from nearby.
Isabelle snorted, glaring at the whole scene. She began to mutter angrily in her head, Of course it would come out gorgeous, now that’s all I’m going to hear. ‘Oh look how pretty Fancy and Finn’s baby is blah blah.’ Why couldn’t it have been ugly? Maybe then he would -
“Izzy? You okay hun?” Jessabelle looked at her sister with concern. Ever since Fancy had become pregnant, Izzy’s behaviour had changed. She seemed angry, often snapping at small things. It only got worse when she got pregnant by Ajax. Jessa had suspected that she had regrets, but denied it when asked. It had only increased the growing rift between them.
“Peachy.” Isabelle snarked. She shifted uncomfortably as the foal in her belly began kicking again. Oh my god, stop it already! Just wait and you can be outside kicking all you want. She yelled internally. Nothing was going to plan, all of this was just a waste. Finn had actively avoided her since then, only talking to her if he absolutely had to. Yet, she was determined to regain his attention. Once the shine wore off the idea of his first foal being born, he’d be back to his sneaking around with other mares, she was sure of it.
Jessa noticed her sister’s belly moving, and quickly assessed that her grouchiness was from the foal kicking again. “Looks like your baby is excited to come out and play. Don’t worry, soon enough both our babies will be out and they’ll have each other to play with. I can’t wait to see them!” Jessa tried to be enthusiastic about it to get her sister to cheer up.
This did bring a faint smile to Isabelle’s lips, though not for the same reason as her sister. If her baby turned out as gorgeous as herself, then Finn would be hard pressed to ignore her. Clearly, if she makes a pretty baby with his father, then theirs would be even better, right? “Yeah, I’m sure they’ll be beautiful foals.” Izzy said with a smile, seeing her sister beam at her in return. Maybe her plans weren’t ruined after all.

I'm very happy with how this piece came out, especially the background. This is what I was aiming for with 'The Journey Home' piece but failed to achieve, at least where the mountains are concerned. I've been waiting to bring in this special baby for over a year, as he was born in april 2020. I'm catching up with my story xD Prepare to see this baby a lot, cause I love him and have great things planned for his future.
