This is my current favorite photo. That's why it is the cover photo on my book, "The Figure In Nature," which is available here: [link]I had this photo in my head for a couple years and kept trying to shoot it while doing other figure shoots. Finally I decided to just do what needed to be done to get it captured. When I get something like this in my head I have to get it recorded or it just won't go away. So I called up one of my favorite models, Lani in the mountains of North Carolina. I knew she could do what it took to get the shot and that she would know a good stream to use. I told her to find the right stream and tell me the day and I'd drive down from Ohio. The day came, we hiked around and found just the right spot. Lani got in the freezing mountain stream and looked beautiful and serene.
Besides being a near perfect capture of the pre-visualized image, I like this shot because it embodies much of what I try to do with the figure in nature...showing the links between the forms and including symbolism. are you serious? Don't you know the poet and painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti? He and the pre-raphaelites are the reason why YOU do such things. Anyway I was wrong, it was not Rossetti but Millais who painted Ophelia.

Sorry, I'm very much aware of those artists. However, they were not in my mind when I made this photo and it was not a conscious attempt to portray Ophelia. That interpretation has been applied to it by many viewers and I don't dispute that the viewer sees what they see in any art work, but that was not my intent.
And, frankly, I'm not that huge a fan of the pre-raphaelites...I think there are very important differences in intent and content with my work. But if you see that in what I do, I'll certainly not argue with you. And I'm always pleased that anyone likes what I do for any reason.

And to add to my last comment this picture is just a whole lot of wonderful. The lighting is pure magic and the movement in this picture is just phenomenal and her hair is just so perfect for the pose and shot. Ethereal is the only word I can use to describe it.

Beautiful photo and, as other have said, it reminds me of a specific painting of Shakespeare's Ophelia. I wish I remembered the painter though.

No apology needed. I thought you were thinking that this was actually a painting or a very manipulated photo. I often get comments like that about it. And, although I was, of course, aware of Ophelia before I took this photo, I can honestly say that Ophelia never entered my mind while I was working on it. This photo came to me before I ever set out to shoot it. I had the idea completely pre-visualized and contacted Lani because I knew she could pull it off. I told her what I wanted to do and let her pick a location near her because I knew she knew lots of good spots. We hiked to the spot she had picked, hiked around a bit looking for just the right place, and then she laid down in that freezing mountain stream and took on the perfect, peaceful look that I was after. One reason I'm so very happy with this photo is that it is exactly as I imagined it long before we shot it.
