Stuff like this makes me really want to develop a few of my own creature ideas. The problem is, I don't know how to sculpt textures properly, so details usually end up being tentacles and horns/spikes. Ah well, I'll get something eventually. Keep the inspiration coming though.

I too had a hard time developing textures. Then I realized that half of that problem was in the anatomy, lighting, mass of the creature, balance, pose so on and so on. Anyway, you should play with the brushes in PS, download some if you can then try them out with different opacity spacing jitter and everything else available in the brushes palette. The biggest key to realistic rendering and creating believable taxtures in all in the lighting. That's why I work on studies for dramatic lighting sometimes just to keep me in shape for the textures when I need them.

Well I don't doubt that learning how to do those things would in some way be useful, but I don't use computers for my art... I don't draw at all actually. With sculpture, it's one thing to come up with an interesting texture, but it's something else to try and apply that texture without deforming the piece. There's a way around this, I just haven't figured it out yet.

Oh damn, sorry dude. Should've looked at your page again(which I just did)to remind me. So before I got into the digital painting, I use to sculpt. You can check out a couple of pieces here if you want. Look in the models section.

Anyway, the best way to get the textures especially when working with the super sculpy is to
1. Build a solid armature using wire and tinfoil.
2. Sculpt the main form including anatomy and pose then bake it.
3. Once it's baked hard, you can apply a layer of skin clay that's either been pre-stamped with the texture, or put it on the form then stamp, sculpt, whatever to get the texture you want. This way, you'll have the overall form, but you won't disturb it when you apply the textured skin.
4.Bake again (less time than the original bake, I even use a heat gun sometimes to have the most control)then paint. Sorry about the mix up man. Hope this helps and thanks again for looking at all the work. I really appreciate it.

Dave
