They're parts of his anatomy. Suppose I could have done a better job of showing that relationship..

spectacular design. I like how it really gives the creature some character...the other image makes him look like he's running away, but when tied with this one, with his facial expression it looks like he was just rolling to a better vantage point and now he's shouting 'bring it on'! Very cool stuff

Woah, you blew me away with this one, Dave! You have the detail focus exactly right, concentrating the eye on the face in a way that looks incredibly natural and intuitive. The painterly background combined with the detail focus makes this ooze palpable atmosphere, and all in all it has an amazing feel to it, like a naturalistic study. Creature design is just plain awesome .. no other way to say it without just naming all the elements you used. I love the luminosity within shadow you've achieved ... great work man, really great work!!
