A treasure valued by the oldest and wisest dragons was the love of music. They were drawn to soothing melodies that calmed their savage nature. They would often bring gifts of gold to be melted down to decorate the finely crafted instruments. In exchange, the ladies of the court would play for the kingdom’s dragons in an open field that the creatures loved the most. At times the princesses would sing songs they had written about each dragon to earn the favor of the majestic beasts. It was the highest honor to sing and play for the creatures of old. There was mutual respect of the people and the dragons and they lived in harmony for centuries.

Here is the painting I did done in watercolors as part of a commission. I posted the drawing to this a week or two ago and spent the entire time on it since. Hope you enjoy it. A good amount of work went into it (about 35+ hours).

I used Winsor & Newton Watercolors on Arches Hot Press watercolor paper, Acrylic Gesso for highlights, and added some Acrylic Gold accents for the dresses and instruments. Size is 18''x24''.

I would be truly honored if you would allow me to use this pic in a Dragon's secret lives montage video. If you would say yes I will compensate by putting your name, screen or real if you prefer, on the pic along with the credits, and the description with a link to your DA page next to it.

If it's not for profit, then go for it. Please credit me as well and please send me a link to the video when it is done. Worst part of people asking me to use something, is they never show me. I'd just like to see it. Thanks!

Thank you. The best part for me is painting large. Gives me a lot of room to add detail

onlyanaccount In reply to DavidHoffrichter [2013-02-11 00:34:28 +0000 UTC]

No kidding, you can add so much detail and you did with such outstanding effort making all of your work noticiable and exceptional.
I suffer from the habit of constantly drawing my pictures too small so when I add details it appears pretty sloppy.
Moving on that is all I have to say on the matter so I shall let you get back to work, have a nice day!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DavidHoffrichter In reply to onlyanaccount [2013-02-11 08:03:34 +0000 UTC]

I avoid small sizes for that very reason. Most of my work is no smaller than 11x14. The smaller the painting the more exact you have to be. Every mistake is intensified because there is less room for mark making, I certainly will admit I am not amazing at realism (although I try! ) and by having paper that's 11x14-18x24... it gives me so much more slack to make those mistakes. Plus I can charge more for the paintings!

as long as we keep on painting and drawing...all is good!

Great use of references!!!! This is an excellent example of the possibilities one could do if they took the time to really utilize reference pictures instead of trying to do everything from memory. On the contrary, you were able to create a very realistic dragon to sit with these women. Very nice blend of reality and imagination.

Thank you! Deviant art has amazing stock and it's a shame that there isn't more work created by professional artists with these wonderful models. I really try to make my backgrounds and references blend as best they can. I don't want to create a piece of art work that looks disjointed Thank you again for the wonderful compliment

I'm shocked by how many people don't even know about Deviantart or it's stock gallery. There is so much to look for!
I've seen some works where you can tell all the parts seem to come from a different image... You successfully merged them all together in this painting though!

I love how you use watercolour! The dragon, the landscape and the two women are incredible!!!
The dots and the blue parts of the dragon make him look so beautiful and somehow gentle. The way he is placed around the women looks dangerous but he doesn't seem to be a threat. He just seems to listen very conzentrated to the melody. Brilliant job on this!!!!
Amazing work!

Darling, I loved your description of the relationship between dragons, music, and the courts. I'm an artist of many mediums but have a rather hard time with animals, creatures, and backgrounds. Would you mind if I used your descriptive blurb as a base/inspiration for a writing piece? I'm not sure I'd post it here on DA, but I thought I'd ask just to be on the safe side.
