Description Built in 1915 this M29-class monitor is one of the last surviving British warship from World War I. She participated in the disastrous Gallipoli campaign and fought in the Mediterranean. Later she was renamed HMS Minerva and Hulk C23.

HMS Illustrious was decommissioned two days before this picture was taken. She was the last Invincible-class aircraft carrier and the last aircraft carrier in the Royal Navy. She will be replaced by the HMS Queen Elizabeth in 2017.

I've always had an interest in monitor warships. Used to own "Big Gun Monitors" by Ian Buxton.

Recently I discovered my great-grandfather briefly served on World War I-era monitors HMS Terror and HMS Drake during the early days of World War II. It made me take a bit more of an interest in this ship than I would have otherwise.
