Last fall I took my wife to California for my dad's retirement and to show her America. She's Japanese and had never experienced an American national park so we made sure to take her to Yosemite and Sequoia national parks; since we didn't have time to get to Death Valley National Monument we also went out to the high desert and visited the garish ghost town of Calico. Honestly, I'd forgotten the vast scale of my homeland until I had to explain to her that Death Valley alone is the size of five Japanese prefectures and that the other parks we visited were as big or bigger than Nagasaki Prefecture. She'd never seen places like these before and had also never experienced a desert, let alone one that just seems to expand endlessly. It was a joy to experience with her.

This is one of Yosemite's most famous views, the Tunnel View. The name comes from the tunnel visitors exit and are immediately confronted with this scene.
