Description Photography homage, Sam Shaw, John Wayne, "Rio Lobo" set, 1970, Old Tucson, Arizona

Forget Monroe, Dean or Garbo, the ultimate and most enduring icon of the silver screen is Marion Morrison, better known as John Wayne. (He was born 98 years after the invention of photography and 13 years after the creation of motion pictures.)

This image was taken at Old Tucson, Arizona shortly after Duke (1907-1979) received his best actor Oscar for "True Grit" in April 1970. Moments after it was snapped, I was kicked off the set while chatting with the great cinematographer William Clothier (1903-1996). But that is another story.
