A few weeks after coming home from his appendectomy Ozzie dug Radley’s number out of his wallet. He took a deep breath and called. The dial was agonizing as his heart pounded in his chest. Radley finally answered.
"Hello?" she asked confused.
“Hi, Radley, this, this is Ozzie Burton from the hospital. I know you’re busy but I was wondering if sometime you could go for that coffee.”
“Oh you weren't kidding! Does tonight work for you?” she laughed.
“Yeah, for sure.” Ozzie smiled getting excited, his hands starting to shake a bit.
“meet me at Grounds, say seven?” Radley asked.
“Grounds at Seven. Perfect. See you there.” He said hanging up, he let out a deep sigh of relief.“Kiddos we’re going to grandmas!” he announced walking out of his room. He got his foals ready to go to their grandmothers for a little while. He threw a brown jacket into his gray shirt and put a little cologne on.
“Dad where are you going?” Lexie asked as he looked at himself in the mirror, rubbing the scruff on his chin.
“I’m going to go have coffee with a friend.” He said smiling, trying not to let it crack too far across his face.
“is it a girl friend?” Izzie asked. Ozzie grinned.
“Yeah, she is, but we're just new friends." he said trying to wipe the smile from his face. He helped his foals into the jeep, bucking Spencer into his carseat and handing him his toy dinosaur. He drove to his mother's house and followed as his children stampeded to the door, fallen leaves being kicked up with their footsteps. They eagerly knocked on the door awaiting their Grandmother's embrace. Ozzie made his way inside and sat on the couch as the foals went to pick out a board game to play with their grandmother.
"You haven't smiled like that for a long time." she said with a smirk creeping on her face. "Are you talking to somebody?" she asked, her heart warming to see her son's eyes full of life again after missing something for years.
"No, but I am going to grab some coffee with someone." he said trying to calm his nerves and smile.
"You have a date!" his mother said squeezing his shoulder affectionatly.
"No, I barely know her. She's just a friend." he said shaking his head.
"Well you sure dress up nicely for your friends." she said in a sarcastic tone. The foals rushed out toting a board game that they sat on the coffee table. Ozzie helped them set it up and they played a few rounds util it was time for Ozzie to be on his way to the coffee shop. He parked his jeep outside the shop and checked his watch, he was five minutes early. He took a deep breath and headed inside, grabbing a table for them. He watched out the door waiting for her. She finally hopped out of a little silver car, still dressed in her scrubs. She rushed inside, flinging her purse on her shoulder. She met Ozzie's eyes and smile and headed over to the table trying to compose herself.
“Sorry I’m late. Hospitals, you know.” She said shrugging, moving her messy curls out of her eyes.
“Not a problem." Ozzie smiled getting up from the table and walking with her to the counter of the coffee shop.
“I’ll buy.” Ozzie said as they got closer and she started opening her purse.
“Are you sure?” she asked
“Yeah, I mean you had to wait on me. It’s the least I can do.”
She smiled. “thank you.” They ordered their coffee and waited at their table.
“So you’re a doctor, what do you specialize in?”
“Pediatrics.” She smiled proudly. "I still have a little ways to go with my education so I still get thrown weird schedules."
“Oh wow, you work with kids. I do too, I teach art classes. I mean, it's not as important as what you do, but still, working with kids is just the best. The things they come up with."
“oh how fun, art can be so therapeutic for them.” She smiled. "I love getting drawings from some of the patients we get."
A barista brought their coffee over, gently sitting the cups at their table.
"Do you want to go out and walk for a bit? The colors are amazing out there." Ozzie smiled as she took a long sip of her caramel macchiato. She nodded her head and stood up, walking to the door with him. He held it open for her as they started to wander the nearby park of changing leaves. They talked about their views of life and pieces of their day. He noticed Radley cradling her coffee cup and holding her body in close for warmth after they had been walking and talking for about forty five minutes.
“Here.” He said taking his jacket off and putting it over her shoulders. She switched her coffee in her hands as she looped her arms through the sleeves.
“Ozzie, thanks for this. I don’t get out much.” She said putting her hand under his arm.
“I don’t either. Three kids, it kind of gets a bit hard to get out.” He shrugged.
“You quit your job to raise your son, right?” Ozzie nodded.
“You are a great father, I can tell.” She said with a smile as they started to approach the coffee shop again.
Ozzie cleared his throat and checked his watch. “Speaking of, I really need to get going. Gotta pick them up from my mom’s house.”
“alright. Well you know I was kind of hesitant to come on a date, but I’m glad I did. You’re sweet, and I’d like to see you again.”
“Wasn’t a date, just coffee.” Ozzie smiled as he walked her to her car. “maybe next time we’ll make it a date.” Ozzie said with a wink. Radley laughed and shook her head.
“Call me.”
“I will.” Ozzie said as she smiled before shutting her car door.
