Ohoh i hola Valiant ! ... I mean, Fernando. He got quite of a revamp, didn't he? quite understabe to fit the setting you made for him. The previous version was rather evocating a XVIIth century character, because of the saber and clothing.
And now I'm quite curious about this medieval setting, especially the floating islands you mentionned... is he some king of the sky?

Yeah... at first I wanted to aim for a much more piratesque setting... but I soon realized that wasn't too fitting for the story I wanted to tell. It also was waaaay too close to the main sources of inspiration, which is something I wish to avoid. At the end, I decided to aim for home: a medieval spanish-esque setting, with familiar names a familiar settings.
But, knowing how things go, I wouldn't be surprised if I revamped his design some more times in the future... here's hoping I don't!
Yes, pretty much! There's quite a lore there regarding how the world works: there's only Up and Down. The Up is populated by the gods and the Down is populated by the dark gods. The floating islands are the land the gods from Above gave to these mortal creatures to avoid Falling Down and the King is this sort of Demi-God figure sent by the gods to protect this kingdom from the dark creatures from Down, that constantly try to take it over.
There's also some more story regarding inmortality, divine powers and such... but all this, as I said, is still under development.

Aye, I understand your choice. I reassure you, the "too-close-from-main-inspiration" side wouldn't be too obvious, as pirates and co are quite a "generic" theme. I mean, it's not copyrighted. Though the medieval spanish-esque setting is something more familiar to you?
Don't worry if you have to revamp characters or story in the future, this happens to everyone... and most of it, when it happens, makes everything better, because it makes you realize what was good, what was bad, useful or not, etc.
Sounds like a clash of gods intrigue! I'd be curious to see how you will come up with the floating islands design... and wait. Fernando is a king. And a demi-god.
..... HE'S A MARY SUUUUU --- naah, just jokin'.

Funnily enough, at the time I am writing this response, I do realize that I have revamped the whole idea again! I went back to the piratesque feel and the classic Valiant! And different story, setting... etc.
Now, onto re-vamping this back to the medieval setting, then back to the pirates setting, then back to the medieval, ad aeternun until the day of Judgement!
Now, seriously. During this summer I had been through quite the creative process. I did really try to work in this setting but, while it is pretty interesting, I just couldn't make it work. I don't know, Fernando isn't as much of a fun character as Valiant was. Using Fernando forces me to write a waaay too serious story. WIth Valiant I can allow myself to crack some jokes and mix it with serious moments.
Also, the advantages that Fernando did provide were already provided by Valaint in a better and quirker way.
Still, just let me reply to you on the last one... yeah, I do really like the lore I did pull off here. I might use it again (in a different way, that is, no kings, probably) for the new story.
Also, well, actually... the concept of Fernando being an inmortal semi-god was one of these ideas I liked but no longer work. You see, Fernando is immortal, but in a Dark-Souls way. He can die, but will wake up much, much later (not as a hollow, though).
Now, gameplay-wise this justifies how the player can keep playing even if Fernando's health falls to 0. This doesn't mean that he can't fail his mission, though.
You see, the story happens (or, at least, used to happen) in a strict timeline. You have 5 weeks to fulfill 5 objectives and beat the bad guy on the final battle. For each objective achieved, you get some nice advantages for the final battle. For each objective failed, disadvantages.
Now, how do you fail each objective? By dying. Each objective was written in such a way that if Fernando died, he wouldn't be around to "protect the druids while they perform the ritual/escort the army through the dangerous passage/save the sages"... etc.
In the final battle, all these fulfilled/unfulfilled plots would come to a conclusion.
Now, here's the catch: you only have one chance to win the big battle. If you fail, the world ends, the dark gods conquer the light gods and you, as Fernando, lose your inmortality and perish (I call it, Langueo's ideal ending XP).
If you win, though, everything's cool again... but the ending would change depending on yout success. Maybe not managing to protect the druids made your kingdom unstable in some way... or maybe protecting that mage made it worse, since that mage was a necromancer in secret. Or maybe helping that princess made it better!
The ending would be good, that's true, it's just that your mission would determine "how good it is".
Now, this whole idea sounds great on paper, but there are some reasons why I discarded it. One of them being the fact that I don't see it fair to punish players with a harder experience.
I mean, we play games for fun, right? What if the player isn't good at games? Should I really worsen his experience the worse he plays?
This whole idea of "your choices have consequences" I see them fit as just "choices", not just "haha, you are not good at the game: here, everyone is dead".
There's also the fact that the story was starting to take itself too seriously. I don't want that.
(but yeah, Fernando is a bit of a Mary sue. btw, did you know that the male version is Gary Stu?)

Many thanks! It took a while, but I am very proud of the results!
Oh yes, the hands... heh, I personally struggle with them, but not too long ago I discovered some tricks to draw them more easily. Now, I draw them mostly by muscle memory... which is nice!

digital art? on your account? its more likely than you think
but srsly, this is so great, especially for a first foray! You did real well on the gradient shading, too- which is something I struggle with (and end up just doing cell shading lol) so good on you!

I don't know... I feeel dirty, as if I heard the voice of millions of traditional artists screaming of terror and were suddenly silenced...
Oh, thanks a lot! I really wasn't sure how to do it, but I discovered that there is a specific tool that allows you to paint in a gradient style... which really helped a lot to do the shading!
In retrospective, I think I will try this cell-shading you mention for the next characters... I think that it does better for semi-toon characters like this one (and yours, that is).
