Description

Isthmus Peak, Lake Hawea
New Zealand

Do you hike to photograph, or do you take photographs of the hike?

I think I'm more of the latter and love the surge of endorphins exercise gives you . If that's not enough of a high, then when scenes like this unfold after 2 hours of intermittent rain while walking up in the dark, it definitely makes it even more worthwhile. It's interesting that when I was in Wanaka I was talking to another photographer about plans for the area. I mentioned I was going to do a couple of the peaks in the area but was met with a response of 'but it might rain'. My response was that it doesn't really matter! I just want to be up there ! Sometimes you end up with a painfully cold experience , sometimes you end up with some cool conditions like in this image. You just never know unless you go!

Just a suggestion, Dylan, but sounds like
you and dynax might enjoy hiking together,
or is Marianne usually with you in NZ?

haha possible - Marianne is but shot most of the sunsets on that trip - the dawn forays were for me - getting up at 3am to get up to these spots for sunrise - she likes her sleep lol

Do you always have cell, radio and beacon
coverageΒ in case of a mishap? No bears or
other large carnivores I expect? Armed?
[just curious] If attacked, get pictures.

I live in NZ and I use to hike to photograph like you say... I did many hikes in the early to mid 2000s so before the digital revolution. I carried cameras (35mm and sometimes 6x7), several lenses, my tripod and food and supplies for more than a week on some epic hikes but I was so overburdened and exhausted with the weight of my pack that I didn't really enjoy those experiences as much as I should have! I learned the hard way and these days I do the latter... take photos of the hike... I recently did the 4-day Tongariro Northern Circuit with just a camera and a fixed 50mm, much easier and still gives you some creative options.

This is another great picture from your impressive NZ collection, did you shoot this handheld or with a tripod? Oh, I just saw your EXIF data on the right and so I assume you probably got away with handheld

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dee-T In reply to dynax700si [2016-03-03 22:01:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I still lug lots of stuff on the hike lol - the sony helps saves weight thoughΒ
This was taken as an exposure blend of multiple exposures with and without flare - the EXIF is probably showing the shortest exposure for the rays
I definitely want to spend more time on the tongariro track!!

Sony A7R II? Jealous! I'm still shooting on my clunky 5D Mk II, I actually got out my 5D (the original model) for a few shots today. I'm hanginging out for the 5D Mk IV, hopefully a significant improvement from Canon, it's been all Nikon and Sony in the last few years!
