If she is strong, sweet, brave, and beautiful, if Macauly Culkin stared in this movie as Kevin MCallister fro home alone, Ariel might fall in love with Macauly but she's older than him, so they could be friends right? It means that she'll use her vision to detect Kevin who is in trouble that the burglars capture him and she says, "Leave him alone" *punches Harry and Marv*. She says, "Are you okay Kevin". Kevin: Yea i'm okay Ariel thank's but, are we still friends?

This picture makes me wonder what the original animators were thinking, Does the pink color on the outfit represent feminine youth? What of the conservative Victorian style of the dress does this represent old style values lost in today's age? Or even the shyness of Ariel's posture, Does it warrant analysis? Anyway this is a great picture worthy of study!

Very good artwork of Ariel. Not really that matching up with the movie, but it's close enough.
And yeah, Ariel is definitely one of the best Disney characters. I'd even say she's better than Belle, really. She manages to be proactive WITHOUT demonizing males in the process. A good balance really. And she's definitely got a lot of genuinely beautiful characteristics, both physically and in terms of overall character. To be frank, she also seemed more intelligent than Belle. At least she was aware of the risks her actions might undertake in general, while Belle seemed to apparently not even realize the risks her actions might bring about at all (her selling out the Beast to the mob is the worst offender there, even with the excuse that she was trying to save her father from being locked up in an asylum). If the film wasn't enough, her role in the TV series was also very good.
Not to mention, unlike Belle, she actually does match internal beauty as well as external beauty (all you need is to compare her character with Vanessa's character for it to be apparent, while the best they could give Belle in terms of foils were those blonde triplets who, at least in the film and possibly some DP books came closer to actually matching internal beauty than Belle did even with their crush on the main villain).
She's a bit like Samus Aran from Metroid, really. And honestly, I wouldn't even consider The Little Mermaid to be a girls movie, despite her inclusion into the DP franchise.
It's a shame that she got bashed royally by some left-wing parents, especially with such crude implications that she only wanted to become human for Eric despite her character song making clear that she desired to become human long before even meeting Eric, and in fact, Eric was just the final push she needed to pursue her dreams, and heck, her overall character actually being proactive. Maybe if Ariel wasn't bashed like that, Belle actually would have come across as an angel instead of butchered alongside the moral of the film in a misguided attempt to make her movie have a "feminist twist," which really came closer to misandry.
And her impact is pretty much observable really: She's got ArielCon, which is basically the Disney equivalent of various SciFi conventions, especially of the level of May the Fourth (the official Star Wars annual conventions) and Star Trek conventions. In fact, I think she's currently the only DP to actually have a convention dedicated to her and her film.
