I somehow managed to stay calm that night as my mother lay sobbing on the shoulder of my grandmother. Dark stripes on her cheeks marked the tears that had fallen.

My father was once so kind and gentle, towards both my mother and I. But something had changed in him when things got tough. He couldn't honestly settle into a life of admiration and responsibility, which was exactly what being a king entailed. Instead of dealing with it maturely, he ran. Ran away from everything he had and now, we were the ones left with nothing but memories.

And there was another slight catch. He'd told one person his wishes before he left. "My son is to take over the pride; he is strong enough, I know it." Maybe he was right, I don't know? He had trained me well, but I was only a teen.

I looked out from the top of pride rock at the surroundings as the rain poured down onto the Pridelands. "Everything the rain touches...is mine"
