I saw your time lapse painting video on YouTube. You had some really neat ideas in making this. And it's such an adorable picture with such striking use of color. I absolutely love it.

... Oh and I forgot to add that I just finally tried the workflow of first mapping out the image in grayscales and then using a colour layer. I've seen others use it as well, but I had this image+video in mind when testing it out. My result is here: [link] It's an interesting workflow, useful for mapping light. Thanks for the inspiration!

Hey nice result!
This technic to split values and color works for some type of artwork , and for other type. Sometime it's a bit frustrating ^ ^
Thanks for the feedback on my little hacks with speedpainting. ( oh, yep, freehand selection + big airbrush makes miracle. ). Sometime I have a vision of speedpainting of only a pile of gradient or pure blocks, with variable sharp or smooth edges.

I should try the freehand selection trick some time, it's producing effects quite different from my usual style, but maybe it's a more effective way to making straight lines (MyPaint's straight line feature is better than GIMP's, since the latter keeps pressure sensitivity throughout the line and thus it usually don't show anything - but still I always felt it a bit akward to do straight lines with a tablet).

The video following this (which I watched already a long time ago) is very interesting. I especially liked your technique of building up the rockfaces with partial freeform selections - an interesting technique creating nice sharp edges indeed. The use of rake-style brushes also gives an impression of high detail from a distance. Most efficient and a nice result!
