Description Okay, so here is the line art for page 4 of THE WEIRDING WILLOWS. It is be a short story that will appear in the September issue of Heavy Metal (on sale July) and drawn by Barnaby Bagenda with Jessica Kholinne coloring.

The story is set after the first big story I'm doing but it features most of the group together. The setting is VICTOR STOKER's house (Badger from Wind in the Willows) and he and ALICE (from Wonderland) are making a meal for their friends.

The story serves to give a first look at the characters and rather than a big action story it is set in Badgers house when they get an unwanted visitor who wants to tell Victor's guests a story.

If it wasn't clear before I want to make clear now that ALICE is 18 years old here, 9 years on from her first trip to Wonderland. Much has changed about her since that first story which will be made clearer in the first series.

This page also introduces their unwanted house guest... CHESHIRE the cat. While here he looks very different to how he's been seen before, he'll look a little more familiar later in the story. Cheshire carries a lot of secrets and of all the characters he passes from one world to the other more than any other.

This sequence is the first page of a story that CHESHIRE the cat is telling the group at Badger's house. It revolves around the origin of evil and what people perceive as such. It is based on part of a story from Hans Christian Anderson but will play a part in the WW world in a different way than he intended. The mischievous sprite in the story will come back to plague the group.

Thank you.

This part of the story I borrowed heavily from Hans Christensen Anderson. The "sprite" on this page will come back to haunt our heroes.

Yeah, the coloring is great. Very fortunate indeed to have Jessica coloring the series.

Cheers,

It's very interesting to me to see the line work and then the color work. It's strange how inking and coloring can lose some of the vitality of the original drawing, but the trade off is usually worth it. This page really benefited from color for additional depth and bringing out the reflection in the spyglass and such elements.
Thanks for posting!

Glad you're enjoying seeing the process. I'm trying to give people an almost real time look at the creative process. The color you see here was revised before it was lettered. It is often an evolving process that isn't set in stone until it sees print. Even then it can change for future printings.

There's a little George Lucas in us all trying to get out.

Skippy cool! Does someone else do the letters or is it a one-man operation (thus making it easier to play with the colors before print)?

Somebody else does do the lettering but as they are part of the same studio (STELLAR Labs) they are able to make sure the lettering works best with the art.
