Whenever I think of Sinnoh, two things pop in my head: the Buneary line and a forest.

Hehe, I'm the opposite, but yes, respectful of opinions~ I think it's more about content. I kind of hate Sinnoh a little less nowadays, but to me it was by far the weakest region in the areas that I enjoy most. The plot was fascinating, though. As for what it contributed to future installments, basically only the physical/special split is worth mentioning...
Whileas Hoenn created for us involved and detailed environments and settings, controlled berry growing, natures, double battles (which definitely is the gateway to rotation and triple battles), a more involved Battle Frontier, a rival who isn't a douchebag, multiple options for transportation with acro/mach bike (and again with ORAS giving us flight control on Latis )... it goes on from there. Gen 3 did more to revolutionize pokemon than any other installment, and I played them all AS they came out. going back into playing them when you didn't live the time just won't give you that clarity.
Additionally, on "too much water!", I don't think that's the problem NEARLY as much as the lack of an in-use map that stays on your screen and helps you navigate, like dungeon maps work in various games. The problem has always existed before and beyond Hoenn (um, original Rock Tunnel? Fuuuuuuck) but Hoenn gets the bad rap because the ease of getting lost traversing the ocean is much higher than in a cave, or any ground location.
I hope someday the Pokemon Company looks into making that an item to use, even if its rare or hard to get, or even if it only reveals smaller areas of the map and get unlocked further, ANYTHING would be better than blindly charging around in game. That's not "Hoenn's Fault", that's not necessarily the problem with this game in particular, but it's a symptom that a few individuals suffer with more than others.

PlatinumDrawings In reply to DemandinCompensation [2014-11-21 01:00:35 +0000 UTC]
Well, technically since the Hoenn remakes are a part of the newer generation games, Gen 6 has given us flight control. And for me the problem with the ocean isn't (just) getting lost, it's the frequent wild Pokémon encounters, you could say "just use repels" but honestly... Unless I'm revisiting an area, I usually expect it to just be fun the first time, not to be pelted by the same old Tentacools at regular intervals. And I agree with the map thing, a map would be very useful for this kind of open area. Though, and I know I'm probably sounding a tad biased here, I haven't cared too much about the different areas you explore, mainly since it's for the most part just a visual aesthetic. It's nice, I can't deny, I just find the visuals in Hoenn a little overrated.

Yeah, and now that I have ORAS, I can also say they HAVE improved on the map feature this time. Probably because of such complaints in the past. ^^ Yeah, it is a gen 6 control device on flight control, though I did like the invention of dive too.
Mmmh, well, if you're not surfing for aestetics, and not surfing for pokemon, there really isn't a reason to surf at all? That's what Fly is for. You get Fly before you even touch the main area of water that is the problem. Surfing is actually very limited up until Lilycove, unless you choose to take it upon yourself (like checking out the abandoned ship, regis, etc).
If anything, I think maybe another key is the fact it's all at once when you need to be surfing? Other games have a lot of surfing too, especially the first two games which came chronologically before Hoenn, but they were broken up in storyline with time on land. Gen1/Gen2 also had the exact same problem of "being pelted by Tentacool", if not worse because Hoenn did introduce Wingull line... but again, it's Hoenn which gets the bad rap in general for "water".
Maybe when you're playing Pokemon, try to think of the effects as less of an aesthetic and more of a world building tool. Being different gives character, it makes things more interesting. You can imagine being in these unique landscapes more and have more fun with it, rather than "okay here is another town of squares where I do X".
I hope I'm not bothering you like this, we're just biased in completely different ways. ^^ I only wish I could give even a fraction of my love for this region to other players who either never experienced it at the time it came out or just got stuck on a particular part of it then wrote the entire game off as sub-par for it.
If you got ORAS, I hope you're enjoying it more this time!

PlatinumDrawings In reply to DemandinCompensation [2014-11-23 04:00:45 +0000 UTC]
Well I feel surfing and water should be balanced, not that it should be gone altogether. Hoenn gets the most bad rap for water mainly because for some people it leaves a very bad impression on the game itself. Water is something of which you are partly left helpless, you can't run, you can't simply go to points with no risk of random encounters like you would on land, of course you're still going to see wild Pokémon regardless, but the quantity becomes tedious after a while. I kind of wish they would add a new feature to Pokémon games in the future, like something for showing where Pokémon would appear in water and where they would not, or something.
In the long run, it is still just a visual aesthetic in my eyes and you could boil it down to just "okay here is another town of squares where I do X", yeah, it does give the world some vibrance of character, but, I don't know about you, but that could be said for any region of Pokémon in terms of being unique and having a character essence. Hoenn offers a sense of variety is all, for me, it's a case of you visit most of these places, and yet some of them you'll almost never come back to or be there for very long as the significance at times is varied also.
And, no you're not bothering me. Believe me when I say I wanted to like Gen 3's Hoenn, for me though, it just didn't seem as worthwhile as I felt it should have been. Sadly I can't play ORAS yet as I live in Europe, and we have to wait for it here. I hope I'll like the game more there anyway, though I do find it a tad disappointing that they removed the gambling minigame and supposedly the battle frontier if that is true. But hey, this is just me.

Yeah, that might have been interesting... Like animating schools of fish, in a way! Well, here's looking towards the future then!
>>"In the long run, it is still just a visual aesthetic in my eyes and you could boil it down to just "okay here is another town of squares where I do X", yeah, it does give the world some vibrance of character, but, I don't know about you, but that could be said for any region of Pokémon in terms of being unique and having a character essence."<<
Actually, that's what Hoenn established! Again, having to live there in the time it came out. Obviously, now that EVERY region gets unique features and beautiful landscapes, you do get to appreciate it less because it's already there...
Though you brought up a great point on towns you'll never come back to. I'm really hoping future games get that, even in Kalos you have this problem where some towns are just rest points in between more important locations. Your home town never becomes significant for anything, it's not even a very interesting place worth staying in if you're been all over the map. That might be something I hope they look into in the future of Pokemon installments.
Nope, battle frontier has an official soundtrack, so I believe it's there! And gambling was nerfed in all games going forward, going way back to HeartGold/SoulSilver. I haven't gotten to Mauville yet, but I'll be sad over it with you. And I'm quite glad I'm not annoying you yet! There was news leaked that you get to surf on animations of pokemon like Latis , but only Kyogre, Sharpedo, and Wailmer... AND they swim faster! Getting you across that water sooner, aw yeah. The MapNav feature in the Pokenav Plus also does show you your location at all times for when you're surfing... but now I'm annoyed I can't look at that AND use the DexNav at the same time. Arrgh! XD Being picky now I guess.
Hope you enjoy your revisit to the region! We should swap FCs. :3

Yeah, a bit more attention to detail to what would be less significant towns would be fantastic. Perhaps at the very least maybe they could include some more side quests/stories or something? Better yet that they would have it as an actual story point instead of just any other town. It's good to hear that the battle frontier might be back, though I'm not getting my hopes up for it just yet as I haven't heard the best news about it so far. But honestly, I don't get the halt on the gambling, I mean, in Japan I believe they have laws against it, but they allow it in the games since they're just games from what I understand. I understand that it's not the most kid-friendly thing out there I suppose, but even so. Though, ah, what can you do? Anyway it's good to hear that getting from place to place isn't going to be so tiring then, and the fact you can see more Pokémon you're riding on, great! I can wait to see my trainer riding on a giant whale-ogre-thing. XD
And sure, we can swap FCs. Here's mine: 3866-9412-7114 Name is Robin.

I'm DC 4785-5430-9575 ^^ Also hah, so in the Slateport Oceanic Museum, there is a map display the character can interact with and he says it's a diorama of the Hoenn region, wonder where Littleroot is? As soon as I read that I laughed to myself and said, "it's the most insignificant speck on the map!"
Which is sad but true in all cases of the starter town.
I'd love to have more sidequests and not as minigames per say. I also play Dragonquest and those are a lot of fun sometimes! Same with the sidequests in Radiant Historia, it lets you have a more "complete" game too. Though, probably my favorite would be the idea of something being right under your nose and its revealed it was in your hometown the entire time. Too bad you were so busy running off to every OTHER part of the region! Naturally, you'd have to anyway, since you wouldn't be strong enough.
Or, you have to save your individual hometown from the baddies! Anything would be better than the current status quo.
I think the gambling thing is dumb as well, the US DOESN'T have laws on it and it gets taken out. It's about parental perception less so than it is a science of what it does to kids. =\ If anything, gambling in a game early on might teach you the reality of what the odds are for real gambling and discourage gambling in the future... though, they'd have to make the function harder, haha.

Alright, added. Well, since I'm a rude person in this case I just have to say this... Heh, "Littleroot." But yeah, status quo does become a tad annoying after a while, they could add a tad more significance to places as a nice surprise, I like what they did with X and Y and the ultimate weapon, I honestly didn't quite expect a giant flower capable of killing potentially thousands to appear out of nowhere and in the middle of town just like that. And apparently it was the European team who censored it, including that for other places too, or so I've heard. Honestly, I don't see a huge deal in a slight gamble minigame in a video game, I mean, if it's not broken don't fix it, there was no issue beforehand. They could release it as a preferably free DLC with an age rating to it, so as to not remove the feel entirely for those older and still keep the game relevant for kids probably. But, c'est la vie I suppose.

I'm tempted to fav' this, but I just can't. I feel like I would be a hypocrite if I did, as I enjoy all of the Generations.
Anyways, 4th Gen overall was pretty great (HGSS and Pt in particular),
but the Sinnoh region in Diamond and Pearl was just... meh.
Thematically, it was a carbon copy of Hoenn's region, with less water, and a snow area...
Thankfully Platinum greatly improved upon it, by letting Sinnoh stand with a Snow focus, but overall, Vanilla Sinnoh just feels bland... kinda like Kanto.

Haha, you don't have to feel that way if you don't want to. I've come to appreciate Sinnoh MORE now, seeing as how I've posted this years ago. I'm a Pokemon fan in general, but I still think the region sucks comparatively to the other regions, and people still use this stamp.
Mmmh, and I'd agree with Kanto if Kanto wasn't the beginning region. Pretty much it's nostalgia alone holds it's own weight for a great number of fans. Naturally vanilla seems bland once you discover chocolate, strawberry, cappucino, etc. XD

Personally, I do like Shinnoh for the reason that I enjoyed some of the locations (The mining City of Oreburgh and the walk up to Spear Pillar to name a couple) and there was plenty to do post-game (compared to Black/White).
What does irritate me is when people use the "No true Pokemon fan does X" argument (or the "No True Scotsman" argument). And this is not only toward the purists who think that Gen 1 is the only good generation - but also the people who think we should all greet each generation with open arms.
The truth is, we all have our likes and dislikes. I'm well aware that people prefer the 1st Gen over the others (I'm one myself) and that everyone has their reservations about the different Pokemon Generations for whatever reason. I just wish we'd all accept that.

Sinnoh was great but i HATE the music. Sinnoh's music is absolutely disgusting... Sinnoh's gym leaders are hot though, just saying. Volkner is so sexy! Roark is also hot and so is his dad. Hoenn sucked for me far more than Sinnoh...
Having the ugliest (just name a few: Shroomish, Breloom, Luvdisc, Cradily, Lileep, Grumpig, Chimecho, Nosepass, Exploud, Sableye, Dusclops, Mawile, Medite, Baltoy and Bagon, the ugliest first stage of a pseudo legendary. Even though it's supposed to be cute (I guess) it's ugly as hell unlike the rest) and weirdest (Claydol. Do I have to say more??).
They really blew the region, water routes especially. It's okay to have three or four water routes but having ten like Hoenn isn't okay in any way. It's hellish to say the least.
I totally loved Sinnoh, Johto and Unova Pokemon and the regions (Sinnoh and Unova especially). They are cute, pretty creative (I love Pokemon that derive from mythology and history and these regions have many Pokemon like that) and not too complex instead of looking like someone combined a lump and a chunk with whiskers and colored it with sickengly sweet colours that irritated me and made me want to vomit (Hoenn). And that's called creativity.
Kanto Pokemon were too simple for me. They're cute but a little boring and not very creative.
And BTW, is it possible to get multiple Regice in Ruby?? Or multiple Hitmonlee in Red?? Or multiple Togepi in Gold (without breeding)?? Or multiple starters in all games (without trading or breeding)?? I'm just curious
