Description God is love.

So
stop throwing Bible verses at my head
stop telling me about damnation and hell
stop showing me a judging God.

Instead
give me a hug when I need it
whisper His promises into my ear
tell me God loves me despite everything
listen to my questions
and look me in the face.

What do you see?
A candidate for hell,
or a sheep He's finding even now?

I have seen time and again where people who were otherwise indifferent or perhaps even hostile to the Gospel, nonetheless responded positively and gratefully to sincere demonstrations of love and displays of interest in their well-being.

Aw thanks for being so thoughtful.
In actual fact, today I visited a large temple and I realised how much the people here need Jesus... there was one lady who even got her little dog to worship one of the many idols in there (holding incense between the dog's paws) which was kind of freaky. o.O And a little girl clamouring because she wanted to worship too like her parents - which is understandable but that's how many children grow up here, and they don't know the true God. So yea... if you could pray for the many people over here who are still all bound up in idol worship, fear of spirits, etc. And for wisdom for those trying to share the Gospel with them; the atmosphere over here is quite resistant (and no wonder too because the church has its problems too and oftenΒ there's class differences between Christians [middle class] and non-Christians [working class]).
How about you, any prayer needs?
God bless you~

Amen to this actually. When Christ came, He did not rant at those who were in sin, He went out and tried to HELP them. The only people He really got angry at were the Pharisees, a.k.a. the hypocrites, the people who preach but don't practice, who fush about the sinners but refuse to see their own problems (the old "splinter and wooden beam in the eyes" imagery).

Yes, that's true. I think it's all too rare that we actually consider how Jesus actually really acted while on earth, and really seriously think about what He would do. So many people walk around with a WWJD bracelet - but how often do we really stop and think what it means? I know I hardly ever think about what it stands for!!!

I LOVE this! This is exactly as I feel about it. Words alone do not convert, especially harsh ones. It is in the LOVING actions of followers that lead wayward souls to Christ. God bless you my friend! Keep up the good work!

I still have issues with how some people reject both hope and judgment, but I agree that the love of God, and the hope we have through that, should be the core of our message to the world. Very insightful.

Yea, it's true we can't ignore judgement - but I find if we emphasise it too much, many non-believers will either be scared off or scared into believing for the completely wrong reason (i.e. saving their skin). It's a rather complex issue and I'm still not sure whether I'm dealing with it correctly Just yesterday I had a long discussion with a friend of mine who believes the exact opposite of what I do - she thinks grace is overemphasised and we have to talk about judgement more, while I think judgement is often overemphasised and grace is the core message of the Gospel! Complicated complicated haha!

Haha, very true. I find that much of what Jesus says in the Gospels has just the right amount of both. For example, the oft quoted (and, considering it's my signature, acceptably so) John 3:16-17 is a good example. I think it's important that we warn without overemphasizing, which, as you said, can be detrimental to people's understanding and acceptance of 'Christianity'.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

deng-li-xin32 In reply to Modnar-Redrosid [2010-06-09 10:44:38 +0000 UTC]

True!! It's hard finding the right balance, but it's important that we do. Overemphasis on either side can in the end be negative.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Modnar-Redrosid In reply to deng-li-xin32 [2010-06-09 23:08:00 +0000 UTC]

And I think it also depends on who we're talking to. To some people, I sometimes feel like quoting "Do not be fooled, God cannot be mocked" and for others "Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

I agree - I noticed my friend and I were having such different views probably because we were thinking about totally different people. She's drawn to the church-distant nominal Christians at our uni, while I'm drawn to Asian non-Christians who stick between buddhism and agnosticism and are put off by the Westernised stereotype of Christianity which they get on TV. Each group in the end needs to hear the Gospel differently.

Very true. I think it's brilliant how God uses different messages to reach out to people. Like I read a book that mentioned how people came to him from Islam because he appeared in visions, and Islamic culture has a big sort of thing with visions. And another one from the same book about how someone learned of the love of Christ without knowing the concept of sin, but felt that real truth.

I've heard of similar things too. And I know many people from China who, just by reading the Bible, came to believe in Jesus!
It's fascinating how God thinks further than us and does miracles where we least expect them

Often those are the best. What's that verse about the Word of God, 'sharper than any doulbe-edged sword'? Very fitting.
