A twisted leafless oak tree stands in a snow covered field.  Brown and yellow grass break through the dusting of snow, and fir trees line the edge of the field.  Overhead, a menacing sky is full of dark clouds.

I've been working on an illustration project that requires a wintery field scene.  While working on it, I decided that I rather liked the landscape without characters.  So I decided to make a cut of it as a standalone artwork.  On the day I made this, it was mid-spring, but the winter has been refusing to go away this year.  It will be in the low thirties again here in the Metro-Atlanta area...in the middle of April.  So I find this image oddly appropriate for the current weather.

I've long wondered how you get such good results, typically with animals. Now the rear is achievable with Vue and maybe some fog brushes in GIMP/PS. That much I can understand. I think the bit that has me foxed is the quality of the foreground grass and ground. In Vue you might think it was ecosystem but its too irregular and interesting for that. Now if it was me I'd use the set up to put a Tiger tank in the foreground but not really your thing!

It is just a vue ecosystem, but in this case, I have the ecosystem applied to only one part of a mixed texture using a fractal based mix.  That's what gives it the spotty look.

Thanks for explaining the technique. Vue can do landscapes better than any other program but can take days.
