The whole "water sprite" thing comes from the anime. Goku and Gojyo bicker a lot and call each other names and one of the names Goku calls Gojyo is "water sprite." I thought this image perfect to use it considering his laying in water 
But .. other than that, I really have no idea where Goku got the impression to call him that XD It's quite funny actually. Anywack, enjoy Lin, and I hope you put this to good use!

Goku might be referring to the fact that Gojyo is a pervert (he is, but we love him anyways). He calls him "water sprite" or "kappa" a lot and the variations of that are endless (he also calls him "cockroach" because he has "antennae" and is much more resilient than the others). A kappa is a water sprite that lives in lakes and rivers in Japan and has been known to sexually harass women who work and bathe there. There are still some postings warning people of kappa infested waters today. Because of this coupled with Goku's limited mind (loves him anyways) we get the redundant "Ero-kappa" which means 'perverted water sprite.' Kappas are very polite, though, and can be immobilized by making them spill the water that they carry on their heads at all times by bowing deeply to them. They will return the gesture and be stuck until they refill the leaf bowl with water.

goku calls gojyo a water sprite, because he is one. his father was a water youkai (demon) and his mother is an unnamed human woman. it hasn't been specified what type of water sprite gojyo is tho, but in the manga he is called a kappa.
