"Yakuza" does not necessarily mean "gangster" per se...I mean it is the direct translation but it could also mean a "shady organization with a lot of influence", but their groups can be considered legal at times. But you are mostly right. And for the record, it is simply Japanese for "gangster". It does not mean the group or person has to be Japanses for them to be considered "Yakuza".
