Description Greek Mythology
Pontus was the primordial god (protogenos) of the sea. He was the sea itself, not merely its resident deity, who was born from earth at the dawn of creation.

Pontos and Gaia (Gaea, the Earth) were parents of the ancient deities known as the Old Men of the Sea. By Thalassa, his watery female counterpart, he was the father of fish and other sea creatures. Poseidon, king of the sea, wed Pontos' eldest granddaughter Amphitrite.

Mesopotamian Mythology
The Abzu or Apsu, is the name for fresh water from underground aquifers which was given a religious fertilising quality in Sumerian and Akkadian mythology. Lakes, springs, rivers, wells, and other sources of fresh water were thought to draw their water from the abzu. In Sumerian and Akkadian mythology, it is referred to as the primeval sea below the void space of the underworld (Kur) and the earth (Ma) above.

Norse Mythology
Aegir ('sea'), Hlér ('sea'), or Gymir ('sea, engulfer'), is a jötunn and a personification of the sea in Norse mythology. In the Old Norse record, Aegir hosts the gods in his halls and is associated with brewing ale.Aegir is attested as married to a goddess, Rán, who also personifies the sea, and together the two produced daughters who personify waves, the Nine Daughters of Aegir and Ran, and Aegir's son is Snær, personified snow. Aegir may also be the father of the beautiful jötunn Gerdr, wife of the god Freyr, or these may be two separate figures who share the same name.
