Description This isn't actually done, but I thought I'd put a photo in my gallery until I finally get the piece finished, and then move this to scraps. I was working on this for my sculpture class last spring. It's carved from pine and is 37 X 7 X 51 inches. Pine is a bitch to get sanded nicely, since the light colored part of the grain is really soft and the dark part is really hard...it ends up with ridges. It's obviously unfinished. Right now I've gotten further than this photo shows (this is just the raw wood with some sanding). I'm done with sanding, staining, adding a clear finish, and making a horse hair mane and tail. She still needs wooden rockers but I don't know when that's going to be done. I just have to fix up the tail before I put up a mostly finished pic of her. But I will be putting the detailed shot of her face in here shortly (transferred from my old DA account).

I'd be willing to sell it once it's finished (almost done but not quite). It would probably cost quite a bit to ship though.

Just wanted to ask if you've finished this yet, because I'm making a similar "rocking horse" (basically, a rocking base for a human in a horse costume), and was curious how long past the feet the rocking base needs to be, or if it can just end at about where the toes are and still be balanced enough to rock well. What is the width of your base as compared to your horse figure? Thanks for any help!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DiamondDustTaxidermy In reply to swandog [2007-09-07 02:20:04 +0000 UTC]

It's not finished and I haven't started on the base yet. It probably won't get done until I have a workshop to finish it in. I want to completely refinish the horse lady at this point too.

But I would look at various rocking horses to see the size and structure of their bases and go from there, modifying it for a human. Good luck, sounds like a neat project!

She's wonderful! Will She be available for purchase? If not, where will She be?

Ponyplay, indeed, very elegant! I mostly ride, but sometimes I wanna be the pony!

I'll consider selling her once she's actually finished. Right now I just finished school and no longer have access to the machine shop and all the tools I need. I'm not too thrilled with the stain I put on her, and I'd like to sand her down again and maybe paint her.

I'm not sure how to go about finishing her rockers and stuff without access to the shop.

Thank you! She will be able to rock once I get her finished up and make the wooden rockers. I didn't make it so she would actually support an adult's weight though. Form before function on this gal, I guess.

Wonderful yet somewhat disturbing, but then again maybe I'm just thinking too much about it or am in the wrong frame of mind. Just wondering, what did you use for the eyes, how many peices of pine is it, as there seems to be a joint at the leg, but thats the only one I see which is really impressive if there are more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DiamondDustTaxidermy In reply to Bingus [2005-07-27 02:32:27 +0000 UTC]

I used glass taxidery eyes. There are 21 pieces of wood in this. Someone asked me before so I actually counted all of them! I only had planks of wood to work with, so had to glue them together to make a large form like this. The head, neck, and body are each made of three pieces, each arm has two pieces, and each leg has four pieces.

Thats pretty amazing, its quite seamless from what I can see. Even the grains seem to match up.

a nice trick to the pine is to mix some clear gloss in with the stain, just a little gloss. It will act as a filler, if you do it just right you get a perfectly smooth surface.
