Description A somewhat unusual twist on the legendary Twitter failwhale , made for the Romantic graphics competition at Altparty 2008 and placed #2 (note that Romantic != romantic). I wish I had won, because the first price included some silkscreen prints donated by Front 242.

I only had about three days to work on this and considering that I'm pretty happy with the result as usually I need about three months to finish a digital painting. I used a great tutorial by `jezebel for the wave (though obviously it didn't end up looking half as nice). I was supposed to draw at least six birds (the original has eight), but ran out of time.

you know it would be so cool if you drew a dead whale upside down with crosses on its eyes okay so sadist but it would be funny

Oh, nice to get a comment from you! Glad you liked it.

There are entire websites dedicated to Failwhale "fan art", so I'm not the only one who has come up with similar ideas (though I got mine before seeing any of such sites - great minds think alike).

Great bit of pop art. From the thumbnail it looks like it was done in oils.

I am especially admiring the clouds... They're beautiful and suttle -- I've never managed to draw non-cartoony-looking clouds digitally...

Am unfortunately unfamiliar with failwhale since I'm not a Twitter user. =X But, congratulations!

I have to admit the clouds are mostly brushes. Sorry. :-> I would have preferred to attempt painting them myself, but as I was pressed for time and happened to have some decent cloud brushes around, I decided to use them. It's true that clouds are more difficult to draw than they may seem, especially if you want Romantic clouds, which tended to be "pompous" like these.
