Description
Enyo is a goddess of destruction, a companion of every war. Enyo, just like Eris, is a part of Ares' entourage and accompanies him in battle.
In the concept of this goddess, I moved away from all (very vague) canons and made her a collective image of my personal vision.
According to various sources, there are two Enyos: Enyo, as goddess of war, daughter of Hera and Zeus; Enyo the Phorcide, daughter of the sea god Phorcys.
Well, my Enyo is a hybrid of the two versions (although it does not fit the chronology, I have my own canon here for a long time now, I know you noticed.)
According to Hesiod, Phorcides are three of Phorcys' gray-haired daughters who had one eye for three. This may remind some of you about Moirai, but Phorcides have nothing to do with fate and such significant space forces. So I decided to clearly separate the portrayals of these sister groups from each other.
I headcanon that Phorcides weren’t exactly on good terms to start with. And one day, when they were attacked by a Cyclops, two sisters gave the monster the youngest of them to pay him off and escape while the monster is distracted. Because of her sisters’ betrayal and the fact that she has been held prisoner by the Cyclops, Enyo changed. Because of this, she grew furious with each day she was imprisoned, until one day the cup of patience overflowed, giving way to a vengeance. In a frenzy, she cracked the Cyclops skull as he slept and turned his head into a bloody mess. Then her grey hair forever turned bloody red. Free from her chains, blind, she went after the sisters and killed both of them, taking their single eye to herself. However, her bloodlust never subsided. With the old life behind her, Enyo joined the Gods of War to become Enyo, who is known as the goddess of war destruction.
Enyo has a huge labrys in her hands - her weapon and an unchanging attribute. I gave her the horn ‘cause it is believed that Enyo inspires the warriors to fight and causes confusion among their enemies. In the form of a skirt, a large number of swords hang on her belt. She’s like a walking arsenal. These blades she hands to the warriors if they have lost or do not yet have their weapons. Enyo puts her weapons in the hands of men and very young teenagers, almost children, so that in a few moments they will be covered in blood. And it’s a really scary picture.
In my understanding, Enyo is the personification of war "in retirement", that is, she held the title of God of War until the birth of Ares. In my headcanon, the gods of war inherit the title in battle. When a young god claiming the title becomes strong enough, they can challenge the one who holds the post of God of War at the moment. By winning, they take the place.
In her time, Enyo herself gave Ares the sword and taught him to hold it. The transfer of the title in their particular case didn’t have the negativity of the overthrow. It was more like a proud passing of the crown to a younger and stronger heir. So, Ares and Enyo have a warm relationship, like a student and a teacher. They’re old friends and loyal comrades in arms.
There was no love relationship between them either, as in my headcanon Enyo prefers women.
And that’s why she became extremely passionate with Eris. In some versions, Enyo is Eris' another name, meaning that it’s the same goddess. But I’ve decided to make Enyo and Eris two separate goddesses, but as a couple. Eris has many children: Anarchy, Ruin, Starvation and other terrible creatures. And I think they fit perfectly with the idea that they are fruits of the union of Discord and Destruction. So, yeah, all of them are her and Enyo’s kids. Despite Eris’ contradictory nature, she and Enyo have a fairly stable alliance. Sometimes they fight like an old couple, but they’ve really been together for years. War has become not only a job for them, but also a family matter, for they are always followed by their terrifying children. In carrying out their work, each of them realizes their craving for destructiveness, and they channel that energy into their work. Maybe that’s why their family is so strong? Although, sure, Enyo embodies destruction and devastation of the war, in reality she’d never have turned against Eris and wouldn’t have wanted to destroy their family. Together, they can initiate great events, I mean, great catastrophes.
