Description Occasionally, Jake would thrust his wings out and spread his tail feathers out as if to fly. I don't think this was a territorial response because he wasn't defending his position aggressively. Rather I think he was just making his presence known and signaling that that this was in fact his property.

Congratulations! Your work is featured here in group's October/November bird spotlight!
Oct. - Nov. Flock-Together Feature: 'TIEL TIME!Cuddly, convivial & comical are just 3 reasons why the cockatiel is one of the top-ranked companion birds.

Cockatiels are also masterly whistlers, male cockatiels in particular are known for their musical serenades, which can be directed at their favored person, their favorite object or their mirror reflection. When not whistling or keeping themselves busy foraging for food and fun around their enclosures, 'tiels often enjoy spending their time snuggling on their favored person’s shoulder.

I was incredibly lucky to catch this. The only thing that would have made it better was if I had gotten his wing tips in the picture as well. Still I'm real proud I was able to catch it.

I have a cockatiel who looks mostly the same, they do exercise either to their wings or because they are having a good time c:

we got him from a friend and they said he was a boy. It is hard to tell with their markings sometimes. No way to tell now. My new bird Ellroy [link] I'm not 100% positive, but I'm pretty sure he's a male by the way he acts.

Budgie? Like a parakeet? I had couple of parakeets growing up. They never did anything like that. In fact out of all the birds I ever had, he's the only one that did

digitalbird06 In reply to insolitus-mundus [2011-02-15 23:57:40 +0000 UTC]

yeah I know, I wish my bird Ellroy would do that. He never really flies or does anything with his wings. Though sometimes he'll hold them out a little when he sings to himself in the mirror.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

insolitus-mundus In reply to digitalbird06 [2011-02-18 21:19:39 +0000 UTC]

The spreading of wings like your bird in the picture is actually a possesive behaviour telling you that whatever they are sitting on 'belongs' to them XD. So maybe your new bird just respect your authority.
The slight holding out of the wings that your current bird does is a showing off male behaviour often done to impress the lady birds.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

digitalbird06 In reply to insolitus-mundus [2011-02-18 21:26:16 +0000 UTC]

yeah, my bird does more than respect my authority, he really loves me and I mean REALLY he would like to love me more but I won't let him. Cause it's gross. He's bonded to me in an unhealthy way, I think.
