This elegant girl is a West African Crowned Crane (Balearica pavonina pavonina). The feature of this bird are unmistable: the elaborate golden crest on top of its head, the graceful slender neck, and long legs. The Crowned cranes live in the wetland (from flooding) portions of grasslands and open savannas. They have relatively short beaks that are perfectly designed for grasping insects and plucking vegetation. These cranes feed mainly by stamping their feet to scare up invertebrates to eat. Another distinct feature about them are their long, prehensile hind toes; which allows them to roost in trees, which they offten do.Photo taken at the Memphis Zoo on 9-26-12.
