I take it that 'Andalusia' in Spain was derived from 'Al-Andalus'?

See, since I never studied much history, I didn't realize that most of Iberia was conquered by Muslims during - uh - the 11th century? TIL! I heard that Muslim Iberia was the one that brought Far Eastern goods into Europe, according to a PBS documentary called Islam: Empire of Faith.

No problem! It was in the 11th century that the Reconquista started.

That's so cool *starry eyes* Tell me, is the stereotype about Europeans naturally knowing several languages true?

Depends. Some languages are really closelyrelated, therefore not very hard to speak. I'm actually very lucky for speaking a Romance language.

I see. Thanks for the reply! Living in the US, I heard that stereotype from the debate about the huge Hispanic population in the Southwestern states (some people debate that children there should be brought up bilingual like in Europe or Canada or something, instead of banning one language), and the Inglourious Basterds. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity. ^^

Yeah, I live in the North, so I'm not that aware of all the issues in the South, but - it seems that people who actually get real immigrants starts developing problems with immigrants. Me, I'm surrounded by skilled 1st generation immigrants who are engineers or doctors or something, with kids who are very good at English and who are pretty American. The Southerners get unskilled immigrants who end up becoming cheap labor who get replaced by the next generation of unskilled immigrants, ha ha. You know we have a constitution that says that, if you're born in the USA, then you're a US citizen? We have a senator (Republican, of course) who's opposing that, and he's from the South - and he does get some support, unfortunately.
. . . As you can see, I have many stereotypes of what the South is like, ha ha.

I hope everything is okay with Irene, unless you're living on the East coast.
Yes, some southern americans can be real xenophobes. We also have that problem here, we have many brazilians here, and we all think that they're always up to no good.
I don't undertsand what's with the immigrants, americans are immigrants themselves. The real U.S. citizens are the Natives.

Oh, I'm in Michigan so Irene doesn't affect me. Poor East Coasters, though . . .
Ha ha, that's like the African-Americans in inner cities and Mexicans for us! Poor them.
Yes, we're all immigrants in the US. That's the argument made by more liberal people here against all the conservative shenanigans. (Lol can you tell that I'm liberal?)

Al-Andalus was a pretty decent guy, with living rather peacefully along jews and christians back when he held control over the Iberian Peninsula. Port and Spain even learned a lot from him (in Port's case it's said every word he has starting with Al- is from Al-Andalusian origin) [link]
But he was far from being a saint and the more he started to discriminate the more Port and the rest came to hate him, until they started waging war against any muslim [link]
