Description "Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy!"

So `delya did this-> tiny little sketch <- and that old, classic feeling I used to get back in the day hit me like a bad burrito craving... where I said "I must make it"

However I ran into a serious problem while making it... I couldn't choose a background! I still haven't chosen one. THAT'S WHY I HAVE SUPPLIED THE ORIGINAL PSD FILE FOR YOU ON THE DOWNLOAD BUTTON TO THE LEFT! You can not only choose your own background for this image, but you can also mess with all the layers that went into making it! For the first time ever, anyone can see how my images go together and play with it. For example, if you make a green background, you can adjust the hue of the reflection layer to match.

Here are a couple examples of ideas that I tried: Speed Racer , Colours

I am very VERY curious to know what you guys out there will do with this PSD file. Remember the whole Rip This fad? Where about 20 people had stolen the image and photoshopped it in strange and unusual ways? That had me dying laughing for about 9 days strait. I'm hoping to recreate that with this image. I want people to make the best and most hilarious Photoshops of this image that they can and send me a link. I will feature ANYONE who does this with a link in an upcoming journal and/or on this deviation directly. As long as it isn't inappropriate... which I'm fully expecting =furryomnivore to do. You heard me Jake.

I included several lighting angles and a couple background examples to get you guys started. I also organized everything so that the layering is easily understood. Experiment!

Oh and if you are getting bad download speeds from DeviantART, download the image from my server AT THIS LINK

So yeah. Get crackin' guys and gals. Or not. If you don't, at least you have crazy stabbed wieners flying through the sky as your desktop.

The sky background I chose as the default can be found on *DinoCruton-Stock 's page HERE

The 'Speed racer' example above uses stock from ~b-u-c-k-l-e-s-stock which you can see HERE

Technical Details

Modeled in Maya 2008 x64 and rendered in Mental Ray. Rendertimes were about 30 minutes or so. This is the first time I've made a render since working at an animation studio and thus I have picked up a few new tricks. I used custom framebuffers, which allowed me to separate the render into it's various bits and pieces without sacrificing render time or creating multiple scenes. In the old days, I used to create completely different maya scenes just to get the reflection passes etc. Using framebuffers allowed me to render the scene without using any render layers at all, or extra scenes, or extra rendertime. It all happens at once then magically poops out the different passes once it's done. While this may not seem like a huge deal in many programs, getting it to work the way you want in maya+mentalray is a challenge.

The biggest problem being that I can't get proper premultiplication with framebuffers, hence the reason for the holdout mask in the psd file instead of just proper transparent layers.

Used the mia_material_x to make framebuffers easier, as it has a built in wrapper. I didn't bother doing so with the fork, which is also why it is only one layer. It's got only 1 part that is lit with diffuse which should only require basic photoshop correction to match the background.

Blah blah boring, on to the pictures:

Some shots from inside the viewport while being constructed: Wirey , Low Poly , Greasy Details , Head Pinch , Displacement Map

I built the sausages under lattices so that I could do this for hours: wweeeEEEeeeeeeeEEEEeeeee

And of course, a picture me of cooking a steak:

Whilst looking at the image (and avoiding the description) i was scrutinizing whether or not this was rendered in Maya or Photoshop only. Just as i was thinking maybe, just maybe, this was a photoshop render. I read in the description that it was indeed from Maya. xD Talk about always getting it wrong!

That aside, your image is really, REALLY amazing! The one and only Maya image i ever rendered looks quite bare-minimum work compared to yours! But i only learnt a bit and realize that Maya will drive me up the wall before my 1st anniversary with the program. Thus i admire those who can understand and function the program greatly. ^_^

Your render is WONDERFUL! thank you for sharing!
