How do you get away with taking photos of people like this without being branded as some kind of creep? Where I live, if I did this, someone would think I'm stalking them and try to destroy my camera.

No, that does not happens. Worst case, you smile and rush. Sometimes you can start a conversation to cool things down, but in my whole photographer's life, I only got in trouble once, where I ended up deleting the photography.
