Well I started out by picking up a Hoya R72 filter and doing very long exposures with my D300. Getting just a filter is a good entry way to shoot IR, you'll need a very calm day to not get motion blur but it will give you the feel for it, and for me the desire to get a modded camera. Thanks!

Thank you for the response I've wanted an IR filter for awhile, but good ones are expensive for a student's budget. But seeing the results, I will definitely buy one!

Thank you The dedicated camera makes it so much easier than just my old filter to get good shots
