I would prefer, if you don't! Because the Character on the pic is my personal character! And she's not for free use or a character any roleplay!

Pity that I see that just now...

Otherwise, cute springlike background.

I think you'd still see the tips of her toes or part of her ankle from that perspective. I can do a quick redline of what I mean, if you'd like to see.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

DolphyDolphiana In reply to tsunami-ryuu [2009-05-26 13:03:23 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean, but it depends on the position of the back leg. I sketched the leg while drawing and it was completely hidden behind the body. Sure, there's a possibility that you could see the second back leg in a pose like that, but it doesn't mean you HAVE to see it no matter what. ^^

Does that make sense? XD

Vekke In reply to DolphyDolphiana [2009-05-26 22:36:10 +0000 UTC]

Not to ~gang up~ on you or anything, but I had a couple of more technical things to say. Here's a diagram of a canine's running gait: [link] It's really helpful to find one of these for the gait you're drawing, because it can be hard to figure out where every leg should be at a given time

I think that, taking into consideration only the front legs, your pose would be closest to 5-- but the opposite back leg would be on the ground.

Judging instead by the distribution of weight (only on one front leg), it'd be closest to 10 or 11. In that case, the "free" front leg would be behind the leg upon which the weight is placed, not pulled against the chest. Also the hind legs would be lower to the ground, and as Tsunami said, more visible.

Not to say you should rework this entire picture as it's a commission and it would be pretty unnecessary anyway, but depicting the gait properly is hard for a lot of people (myself included) and I think it would be a good thing for you to keep an eye on in the future (: If you ever want I can try and pull up some of these diagrams for other animals and different gaits, I think I have books with a few.

That said, your backgrounds are really nice :3

Wow, thanks for the advice, I`ve saved the image. It will surely be of much help in the future.

When I draw I usually pick a pose that looks best, and don't think too much about if it's 100% natural. Like one of my lecturer's once said "Beauty before logic".

But I'll pay more attention to it. ^^

tsunami-ryuu In reply to DolphyDolphiana [2009-05-26 21:45:22 +0000 UTC]

Well, I see how it would technically be possible for her leg to be out of sight... but it would have to be contracted very high up against her body, which doesn't quite make sense with the "skipping" gait she has.

There are definitely angles at which you don't see all four limbs of a quadruped, but I think the composition of this picture would be improved by adding the right hind leg. Having her toes or her ankle showing would help break up the negative space between her foreleg, her belly, and her left hind leg. The way it is now, you have the two black forelegs, and then the lone black hind leg sticking out in the back. That kind of visually disrupts the image and makes the absence of the back right leg a focal point.

It's a bit of an aesthetic thing. Always keep the negative space in mind as well as the animal's anatomy.

Cool I've found that paying close attention to negative space helps make an image flow better. Took me awhile to realize how important negative space and silhouettes are, but I think using them has helped me.
