11" x 14" oil on canvas painting of the transonic research airplane of the late 1940s. It was designed in 1945 and first flew in 1947, setting a world speed record, just under the speed of sound. That one was the more famous orange color scheme. This one is the longer lasting white color after its record flight.
It is little remembered these days, but tested the transonic realm, while the X-1 tested the supersonic realm.
