Acrylic on hardboard, 18" x 24"And the angel said to them, βFear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
LUKE 2:10-11, ESV
This is another take on my previous depiction of the same event "Good News of Great Joy" which I was never really satisfied with. That composition was designed to mirror its companion piece "Wise Men of the East" but didn't really accomplish it well because of the larger size of the figures. This version is much closer to my original concept.

Ah, I see what you mean. Looks to me like theyβre basing those depictions on cherubim, which I would distinguish from the heavenly beings called angels/messengers. The earliest known Christian image of an angel is in the Catacomb of Priscilla, which dates to the third century AD. It doesnβt have wings and neither do the other earliest examples of angels in Christian art. For my own visual interpretation I just went back to the biblical texts (especially Daniel) and tried to draw exactly whatβs described. Itβs surprising to me that more people havenβt done the same thing.

I heard that the winged angels came from pagan gods. That's why christians should draw or paint angels as wingless man like creatures.

They might have gotten that idea because secular putti (winged infants that were believed to influence human behavior in antiquity) somehow became confused with cherubim. According Chrysostom, Christians represent angels with wings not because they actually have them but just to symbolize their heavenly nature.

I like it a lot. Most people draw angels as winged being, which isn't a bad thing, but it is nice to see one that looks magnificent and ethereal instead. Nice job.
