Thanks very much. This one doesn't seem to be that popular, but on a technical level, I think it turned better than much of my other work.

Thanks. There's a lot details in these stories that you don't notice or think about until you try to draw them.

I think subject matter like this needs a little extra realism since the story is so often dismissed as fantasy.

One of the popular misconceptions about the great fish is that it represents a threat to Jonah. Since he was about to drown, it was actually it was his salvation. I still wanted it to look scary though.

One popular misconception I wanted to correct is that the whale represents a threat to Jonah. Itβs actually an agent of deliverance (though an extremely scary and unpleasant one Iβm sure) from the danger of drowning in the sea. Thanks so much for your comment!

Oh, Yes. I'd be terrified to be swallowed by a fish. Isn't it like how God can use horrible experiences to bring Him glory and to draw people to Him?
Welcome :3

This is probably the most frightening scene I've attempted to illustrate, so if it has that effect I'm very glad.

Wow.. niceness..I would've drawn a sea monster instead of a whale for obvious reasons but .. nicely done

Thank you for the kind words. To be honest though, the reasons for depicting the βgreat fishβ as a sea monster arenβt entirely obvious to me.

Well, the Hebrew word βdagβ can include a pretty wide collection of creatures since it doesnβt mean anything more specific than βaquatic beast.β And youβre right that most whale throats are too small, all of them in fact, except for the sperm whale, which could easily swallow a man. This is what makes it the most likely creature to be Jonahβs βgreat fishβ (that we know of).
Of course itβs very possible the fish was some completely unknown creature or even a special one-time creation of God. Lots of artists have depicted it as such. My problem with illustrating that kind of purely imagined creature though, is that it moves the painting into the fantasy genre for most viewers, which is also, unfortunately, the way many people read the story itself. Hopefully, using an actual and familiar type of whale here helps to tell the story as something that really happened.

This is second painting in a series of three, which were done for a book Iβm working on. Jonah is such an illustratable book though, that there are at least three more I might do at some point.

i would like to see the book when it comes out!
i have been trying to illustrate Revelations off and on for many years now but with no success. in 2006 i started painting high points from the bible starting with Genesis- there are only 3 finished so far, but making progress. currently working on a depiction of Moses watching the writing of the 10 commandments

Apparently sperm whales are very difficult to find decent reference on. I eventually found a nice plastic model that gave me what I needed.
