Description Oil on board, 15 X 22

When the sun rose, God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah so that he was faint. And he asked that he might die and said, β€œIt is better for me to die than to live.”
Jonah 4:8

I knew I had succeeded in creating a real feeling of heat in this piece when my 3-year-old saw it and said "Oooh, he's gettin HOT!"

Jonah, he was kinda what most christians are. God tells us to spread the word, go to dangerous places and we try ad run from God. In the end God's will will be done though, as we can see.

Well done on this piece!

I love the intensity of this, and I love the remains of his plant leading us right to him.

Jonah was such a tragic guy.

Yeah, but I don’t think he was a lost cause. Since he was very likely the author of the book, he must have learned his lesson in the end. Thanks so much for your comment!

This is a fantastic depiction of Jonah! Everyone always thinks about whales. We don't think much about the end of the book of Jonah. I love this painting.

Thank you for saying such kind things. I guess a man-swallowing whale makes a more spectacular mark on popular imagination, since it’s not exactly a difficult book to read all the way through.

Emberblue In reply to DouglasRamsey [2011-08-16 20:02:36 +0000 UTC]

Haha! Yeah, man-eating whales are much more epic. That is always the story they tell the children in Sunday school. Possibly because they can relate and understand it better? Maybe people have a hard time understanding why Jonah was so mad the plant wilted?

Even though it ends very abruptly, I think that the end of the book of Jonah truly expresses in the simplest way God's view of humanity. I wish more people understood it.
