Verse frowned as messengers flew hither and thither, throwing out words like peace and opportunity as if they hadn’t just spent six months cowering behind impenetrable walls of stone. While leaders gave up and gained titles amidst the aftermath of this mess, reigning in a new Sultan for the second time in that year, the planter did her best not to feel cynical. One leader came in following undesirable deals that sowed the beginnings of war; another came in as amity was garnered over just as unsatisfactory terms. Verse could only hope the irony of it all would not prompt history to repeat itself too quickly.
Silence engulfed the Pegasus as she stared out over the ruins of the Osulas, the droning coversations of other equine fading away. Peace was a word sour on the strawberry roan’s tongue as she thought on her home, destroyed by the hands of her own in an attempt to thwart those they fought. A time for celebration? Their homes were destroyed, their livelihoods buried among dust, sand, and stone. Families were still separated, split between those who hadn’t yet returned from their guerrilla warfare and those who hadn’t yet been transported out of the Oasis. Nomadic innocents and fleeing loved ones laid dead out in the desert among razed makeshift settlements and beneath layers of newly windswept sand. Captured Serorans laid shackled on auction blocks a whole continent away, ripped from friends and family under the guise of war to act as slaves for the Aodhian machine. Their world was gone, and yet they had to find a way out of the sandstorm, as Serorans always had.
Could they do it again? Could she do it again?
Verse wasn't sure.
