Oh I assume she has the fighting skill to use them, but when everybody else has a highly effective weapon for neutralizing a target it doesn't really make her feel much better about being effective at karate style forearm blocks when they're slashing, crushing, and stabbing monsters to death. Though she just might be the
'tank' of the group come to think of it. Or an effective vigilante.

...What exactly are tonfas anyway? I know they're kind of like a club, but how do they make an effective weapon :/ They don't really look like they'd be that impressive

They can be used as punch-clubs like you see (which also offer a forearm block the can be used to neck-lock someone for subduing or held like a sword with the 90 being a guard. [link]
They are used a lot by police officers [link]

The 'scientist' quavered under the look she gave him as she prepared to leap off the box for an especially damaging blow.

I had the image in my mind of the old 'guy goes off the road in an out of the way area and is 'rescued' by the scientists and given a new body' scenario.
The 'loyal female bodyguard/enforcer' mold lacked the 'loyal'.

I opened the door to find our new teamate slouching on a low wall and smiled at them, "Thanks so much for doing this for us, Rod. When Blunt sprained her ankle I thought that was it for the team this year!"
"No problem, I don't have anything to do this time of year anyway, what with the guy's team being disqualified because of well, you know...", they trailed off, seeing I was suddenly very interested in a small piece of fluff on my tank top and obviously realising that it was a matter best left alone, "are you sure this isn't against the tournament's rules?", Rod said, idly twirling the tonfa like a baton.
"I checked with the judges myself; as long as you've been like that way for six weeks before your first match, you're fine.", I smiled again; Rod had adapted quite well despite insisting that keeping their hair short was just 'to keep it out of the way' and refusing to wear makeup, "It begins in four and our bracket doesn't start for another month after that...which gives me and the girls plenty of time to help you get used to it.", I made a show of tightening the tape on my hand wraps, making it clear exactly how I was planning to help; she stood up on the wall, but clearly wanted a more explicit challenge...
"I'm not sure I'll ever get used to wearing this.", she swept a tonfa over her body, gesturing to her tank top and trousers.
"It's our team's uniform so you damn well better!", I retorted, "Now get ready!"
Rod planted a foot on the ground near the wall and took up a stance as I raised my fists and lifted my heel off the ground while taking a step forward, "I though you'd never ask!"
I wanted to do voluntary TG related caption, for a change (who knows, next time I might even do a non-TG one
