Me Dragga felt the need to post. Me Dragga wanted to make a mermaid-thing for fantasy world. Me Dragga am Grimlock.

Anyway, I felt that a mermaid would be an appropriate addition to my fantasy world...or one of them out of my personal multiverse. However, I didn't want just a chick with a fishy tail. Instead I combined aspects of some sea critters that I thought would...make an interesting critter. Do not judge my limited vocabulary! I also want it to see alien, so I gave it those eyes, since that fits into the common descriptions of The Greys. *theramin chord*

The Mermaid is a benevolent creature of the deep, but has gained a rather sinister reputation from the tales of sailors. They're described as appearing in the guise of a beautiful woman, singing a haunting song to draw in sailors to devour. In truth, they sing just to sing, but often "perform" these songs at night. Their forms are simply obscured by the darkness, with the sailors' curiosity just getting the better of them.
The race is often thought of as ambigious in gender, but in reality, the difference lies in the faces. Males have spiny fins aside their heads and generally have whiskers like a catfish, while females simply have flowing fins on either side of their heads. Males are still technically Mermaids, as they consider it their race's rightful name, but are commonly referred to as Mermen or Tritons. The Mermaids are born from eggs resembling those of a shark, with a rootlike system that anchors into the seafloor in nesting areas.
Another trait that has led to their infamous reputation is their teeth. Mermaid teeth are remarkably sharp and are constantly replaced as they wear down, another parallel to sharks. If they wash up on shore, people will often fashion Mermaid teeth into cutting tools and weapons. Mermaid skin is also valued on many markets, due to its durablity. Although rare to get ahold of, the skin has proven to be as tough as chain mail without the risk of injury from damage when treated.
