So a good friend of mine and I had played We Happy Few when he came to visit a few weeks back, and we fell in love with the game. This game is off the rails peculiar and we adore it. So, naturally, we had to write and doodle some stuff for it. We both really, really liked Arthur Hastings and Sally Boyle as characters, and it was disheartening to see them have such a nastly falling out in the game. So, we came up with our own little canon-divergent AU for them.

[SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT YET PLAYED/WATCHED WE HAPPY FEW]

So pretty much everything is the same in this AU except Arthur doesn't have his head quite so far up his ass and is about 3% more compassionate than he is in the game. He and Sally are actually able to sit down and discuss what happened between them, and while Arthur is still very much hurt at first, he waits and listens to what Sally has to say.

Sally essentially tells him his father coerced her into doing as he told her or else he was going to toss her out. Seeing as she was living under his roof and had literally no where else to go, she couldn't tell him no. Arthur wants to protest at first, but he starts to recall how his father treated Percy sometimes, and how he could be nearly cruel when it came to punishing him, and he slowly begins to realize that what his father did was likely not out of character for him.

Once he finally gets his bearings he pulls her into the tightest hug imaginable and the two of them hug it out for what feels like hours. There are so many emotions too. They've still missed each other so much and it shows.

So yeah basically in this AU these two are able to talk things out and actually rekindle their friendship and find so much comfort in each other as they try to figure out a way to escape Wellington Wells.

Plus Arthur gets to meet Gwen in this AU. And lemme tell ya, it is a treat. Sally scoops her up and very gently places her in Arthur's arms just as Gwen's starting to wake up from her nap. Arthur just studies her for the longest moment and runs his finger across her nose and cheeks, and then Gwen wakes up and blinks at him curiously, and then coos and reaches her hands up towards him. And oh boy, Arthur is not prepared for the sudden onset of emotions he gets. He carefully eases himself down onto Sally's bed and just grins at Gwen because oh God she's the most precious thing he's ever seen and oh God has he been crying this whole time pull yourself together Arthur. Sally just chuckles and sits down next to him and tells him she was the exact same way when she held her for the first time, it's nothing to be ashamed about.

That's essentially everything we've got so far for this AU. It's pretty much the same characters as we know them, just with a little bit of canon divergence. I really liked how Sally and Arthur played off each other and while I'm not sure if I ship them in this AU just yet, I am still very much attached to their friendship.
